Welcome to Orb
Graffiti, a place for me to write daily about life and
computers. Contrary to popular belief, the two are not interchangeable.

1937 - Good evening. It's alright, still kickin'. I've been busy rebuilding a couple of important machines. And Monday nights are almost always a total loss because of the chore-suite I've assigned for that night. Oh, well. And oh, well, again. I guess that I won't be watching any football at all this season, since Tom and the boys didn't make it to the Stupor Bowl. And to think of how much I was looking forward to Prince at halftime ...
</shudder>
Okay. Plenty to do, and not much progress on Harmony yet. So I'll futz around with the MacBook Pro for a while now. No Buffy tonight ... we're about halfway through Season 6, and I'm getting vibes that they're reaching for story line. Anyway, catch y'all later.

1245 - Good afternoon. Made it to the office in good time this morning, and at around 0900, a catastrophic air-handler failure ate a fan belt and smoked us out of our suite. Oh, well, I have plenty to do that just requires a computer and email, not necessarily touching the machines. So planning and spreadsheets for me from the home office today, until a concall at 1500. This is good, actually, as I'd not had the quiet time needed to do this planning and prep-work yet. No other news worthy of sharing, just more of the same old boring stuff. Ciao...

1038 - Good morning. More fun than a barrel
of monkeys! At 0440 this morning, I awoke to find all of us shivering. The
inside temp had dropped to about 54° F - the pilot light must have
blown out in the furnace just after we retired. As I wandered downstairs
to relight it, I noted that the outside temperature was around 15° F,
a nice spring day in North Dakota, but pretty durn cold for these parts.
With wind chill, we're assured by the weatherliars that the perceived
temps are around 0° F.
I'm running bunches of snapshot backups at the moment,
and doing a bunch of network planning goo. So, busy, gotta run. Have a
great Friday!

0944 - Good morning.. We slept in today, and I have some more rearranging to do. We'll get out and do the shopping, then I'll be back here. See ya in a bit.
1306 - Good afternoon. Doc Searls turned me on to youparklikeanasshole.com. Me, I mostly figure that sort of behavior is why they issue handicapped stickers here in Maryland ... to distinctively mark drivers who can't drive, can't park, or both.
In my ongoing computing reorganization, I've off-centered the Samsung 20" LCD, and put the MacBook Pro up next to it. When home at my desk, I'll use this as my desktop machine, and the display is stretched across both screens. In the picture at right, I'm playing World of Warcraft on the large screen, and got assorted chore-like things (xterms, mail client, etc.) on the MacBook screen at left. So far I've only been able to bog this machine down twice. The first time while I was importing the last several years of digital snaps into iPhoto, and the second was while processing the NFS-mounted music directory into iTunes. The only thing I'm uncomfortable with is this little bluetooth keyboard. I picked it up back when I bought the Mini back in 2005. It still doesn't fit my hands, and I still prefer the sculpted shape of the MS Natural. So I'll plug that into the laptop, and return this keyboard to the graveyard.
Light fixtures and ceiling fans were on the menu yesterday, as we went to Lowes to pick out some new fixtures to replace stuff that's old, creaky, and going disfunctional. Now I've got plenty to work on, and I think I'll go put up a fixture or two before continuing to work on this computing setup rearrangement.
As Congress gears up to defy the President, my only hope is that Gates is wrong and this resolution doesn't hearten and strengthen the enemies of our soldiers. They continue to make sacrifices on the path of the Administration's policies, and I'm damned proud of their fight and their spirit. It was a bad week, too. Counting three older non-hostile casualty reports, 47 deaths of our warriors were reported in this last week. Sigh. My heart goes out to the families of the fallen...
