2023 - Good evening. A disappointing day T-3 at the office. I got some stuff done, though. And Mike Garvey cheered me up...

Brian,

Don't short-change yourself. Molly's antics are simply the result of your successful transference of at least one of your engrams of lesser import (e.g. "The Time Warp") to a canine vessel of suitable proportions. Since she cannot communicate vocally, she's doing the next best thing...

"It's just a jump to the left,
And then a step to the right"

Yeah, it's been suggested that I underrate myself from time to time. Oh, well. I had no idea that I was sub-consciously transferring my katra to a sub-par canine. Anyway, the bills are paid, the trash is out, and I'm scarfing a late, light supper. Now, on to my further assorted tasks...

1101 - Good morning. Whoops. I meant to post something yesterday, but wolverines were rampaging through the dark forests in my foetid imagination. So... Anyway, today I'm clearing up as much of my punchlist as I can, labelling things, taking last minute notes to hand off to someone else (anyone else), etc., etc. Busy, busy day. Later!

0951 - Good morning. We slept in a bit this morning, but now Marcia's gone ... off to Malice Domestic for a three-day Mystery fest. Me? I'm going to get the watering system setup, finally. And I'll head down to the nursery in a while to pick up a few flats of annuals to put into the front flower beds. I've got several days here until the new gig starts, and several projects in mind, as well as plenty of reading to do. More later, perhaps...

Watering heads, pepper plantsAll of the vegetable beds0851 - Good morning. After some trials and tribulations, I did get the watering system mostly setup. One of my timer valve head sprung a terminal leak, so I need to get that replaced. I put in more sprinkler heads, and turned them down further, to keep the watering within the confines of the beds. That should make for a less-mushy garden maintenance experience this season. In these pictures, you can see a closer shot of the pepper planting bed, and at right, a long view of all the vegetable beds. I still have about a bed and a half that need plants... I want some Salsa peppers and I'm not sure what else, yet. Oh, zucchini for sure. I have summer and winter squash in, but no zucchini yet. That may complete the plantings for the year as far as vegetables go.

Next week I might consider starting to lay in more watering system gear out front, to keep the flowers in full bloom during dry, hot spells. And I still have to put in the annuals in the main flower beds - I'm leaning towards blues and whites this year, to tie back into the house and trim colors.

Strawberries in full bloomThe strawberries look to be doing well. There are tons of blooms, and a few small fruit already developing. Now if we can only keep Molly's snout away from all of that (yeah, the beds are already fenced in), we'll do well, early, this year.

I installed Feisty on the Mac Mini yesterday afternoon, too. That was a bit of an adventure, as Ubuntu for PPC isn't an official build anymore, and there aren't ISOs on the official mirrors as a result. But a few minutes with Google found me both the status of the platform under the Ubuntu project, and ISO images. Installing and upgrading was a snap, thereafter. That little chassis is hooked up to the TV and to the stereo gear - its purpose is primarily playing music from the home server and doing slide shows from all the digital pictures we've taken over the years.

Time for coffee. Happy Saturday.

1020 - Good morning. Among other chores yesterday, I tried re-fettling the old Compaq laptop with Kubuntu 7.04, almost everything worked ... except the Netgear G wireless card. I was able to install ndiswrapper, and then the driver - everything appeared to be recognized, but the WPA stuff just wouldn't connect. I was chatting with Bob later in the afternoon, and he suggested that I pull down a copy of Xandros 4.1 OCE. So I went over to Geek Connection and pulled it down. In a little while here, I'll burn that to disc and give it a try. I also have to make a home center run, to pick up some misting heads and a replacement for that borked timer valve. I didn't get around to that yesterday.

The beat goes on in the Middle East, while Congress and Administration wrangle over dollars and policy, young men and women give their lives to our causes. They do us honor - we do well to honor them and their comrades-under-arms with all of our heart and soul. To the fallen...

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
