1822 - Good evening. Vote. We did, even though we drove past our old polling place. Yeah, it's still in action, but we've been moved over to Bowie State, several miles away, instead of still voting at the church, about 1 mile away. I thought they'd decommissioned the old polling place, but no. That's annoying. Still, there's time. Get out and vote!

Test fit: Sink and fixtures
Test fit: Sink and fixtures

1653 - Good afternon. Hooray. I passed the first of two certification tests, I'm now a CCSA. If all goes well, next week I'll have a CCSE, too. Yeah, funny that I'm now certified in a product from $FIRM[n-1], eh?

I trimmed glass tiles and did a test fit of the sink (and fixtures) on Monday night, just to see how it all looked together. We'd ordered all this stuff online, but it's nice to see how it all goes together. I used a glass cutter to mark and break each of the tiles that needed mods, only about eight of them in all. Then I gave the front edge strip a final coat of Danish Oil.

Tuesday night I affixed the counter front strip to the countertop with brads and adhesive. I think it looks really nice. With that in place I can do the grout, real soon now. I should do it tonight, but instead i think I'll wait and do that on Saturday. Instead, I'll start preparing the backsplash strips. I came up with a neat idea for those — I'm looking forward to revealing that when it's ready.

Of course, there's school work, too. And it's Valentine's Day. I'd better do something, or the red around here will be arterial, from my jugular. Ciao!

0943 - Good morning. No post last night, it was Marcia's birthday! Now she's out breakfasting with one of her embroidery friends who's visiting in the area, and I'm about to start grouting the tile. Clearly we have different concepts of relaxing on a three-day weekend. Back later...

1124 - Back again. The grouting's done. I started by masking off the front cherry strip, and stapled a trashbag inside the sink opening. Then I took the picture at left. After further consideration, I also draped the whole front of the cabinet with more trashbags, knowing my penchant for making a mess. I mixed up about 2/3 of the 10 pound box of unsanded grout, and let it set for 10 minutes, per the instructions. I find that it's harder to grout fine lines between small tiles with unsanded grout, than to go around bigger tiles with sanded grout. I think I did okay, though. I've gone over it with the damp sponge, and in two or three hours I'll buff off the tiles with a cloth.

In the meantime, I really will go work on the splash strips. I never did get that sub-project going on Thursday. I also need to start putting final coat on the trim around the room.

February 17, 2008

1541 - Good afternoon. We're flipping away from BJ's back to Costco for our large-shopping source. Marcia prefers the selection/brands carried by the latter, so it goes. Once home, I continued applying finish to the splash rails. Then I fabricated the small trim that'll mask the variations between the walls and the splash rails. I *may* be done with wood ... no, no I'm not. I'm going to get a couple of pieces of white 3/4" quarter round to go around the perimeter of the bathroom at tile level. There was oak there before. That'll go in last, though. So, remaining tasks:

  1. Finish and install splash rails.
  2. Finish and install splash rail trim.
  3. Install fixtures to sink, install sink.
  4. Complete plumbing.
  5. Finish painting trim
  6. Cut, install quarter-round.
  7. Install wall-mount towel bars, mirror.
  8. Reinstall door.

I should be done by next weekend. /me wanders off muttering about pigs that fly.

As the war in Iraq continues, I'll point out (for those that missed this info) the following: There are just under 95,000 National Guards and Reservists mobilized as of this month. Mobilized Reservist or Active Duty: the sacrfices they make on our behalf is the same - they're in harm's way for us, and we are honored by their service. My condolences to the families and units of the fallen:

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
