1826 - Good evening. Here's what I just dropped into the backchannel...

Mailbag is online.

I think it's clean (of font formatting issues), and IMO, it's a solid mailbag with substantive replies from you, Jerry ... and that's a good thing.

Now, I have a paper draft due, a separate quiz, water on the herb garden, harvest from the vegetable garden, a writing desk I'm finishing that needs a coat of Tung oil, trash and recycling to collect to the curb, and offsite backup refresh still to do this evening. I guess I'd better just print this out, too, and cross stuff off as I get it done. Grin.

Oh, yeah, and supper sometime in there. What is it you say about dancing?

be well.

Gotta roll. Ciao!

2217 - Good evening ... I guess. It's dark out, so that must be right. Supper out with Marcia, Linda, Jerry, and Barbara to celebrate the latter's birthday. Yay. Too much yummy pasta and cheesy biscuits - I'm very full, and very tired. I did get everything that needed done, done, last night. Huzzah! Now, go watch the first part of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. You'll laugh. You'll cry. You'll cry some more. You'll wish it'd stop. Then it does. There are two more acts to go. Support Joss in this experiment, help talent break free of the bondage of studios everywhere, or at least a yummy cookie or two. Time to sleep, now.

The new desk
The new desk

2044 - Good evening. Before we went out to supper last night, I did complete the small desk designed for Harmony to rest on here in the home office. By complete, I mean that I attached the top, brought it upstairs, and placed it. That didn't take much, really. The whole thing is finished in Tung Oil: the top got two coats, each buffed out. The pine, being a fairly thirsty wood, soaked that right up. Being pine, it would have tended not to take a stain well. But I think it looks just fine. I explicitly selected those pieces with more character (aka knots) for the front - and the front legs are matched: I cut that knot down the middle on purpose.

Marcia's being quite active on the job-hunting front - she had five hours or so of meetings today, and another round tomorrow. Plucky, eh?

Tonight is school work, again (or still). I've got a first draft of a paper due next Monday, plus a bunch of other work to do. I'll go water the herbs, grab some food, and get cracking. Ciao! ... Okay, I did all that. Now I guess I can run the publish script. Sigh.

2144 - Good evening. Tonight, after grilling chops for supper, I've been busy doing critique work on other group projects in my Network Security class. I'm on call this week (Wednesday to Wednesday), which means I sleep like crap, knowing that I have to be able to hear the phone for pages or forwarded calls. Last night I got a pass, though, because Marcia and I took Linda to Wolf Trap to see the Indigo Girls. That was fun. Now I have some more reading to do. Ciao!

1844 - Good evening. Sorry about yesterday. It got eaten by half a day of yard work, half a day of working the final draft of my individual project for class, and three hours in the evening working on firewall updates from afar. Today we shopped, I finished up the draft version of my paper (due tomorrow), and spent some time going through and critiquing group project papers.

Today was First Salsa! We got enough tomatoes out that I was able to make a small amount of salsa, maybe a quart or so. I used 2/3 of a jalapeno, and most of a cayenne pepper for spice, three garlic cloves, a small onion, some cilantro out of the garden, and the eight or nine tomatoes. Yum. Salsa season is short around here, because I only make it when our garden is producing tomatoes. Unless we're really lucky, it won't stretch to October. Oh, hey, we have a couple of eggplant fruit set, too.

We had some bad news out of Afghanistan this week. We lost nine of this weeks' fallen warriors in one attack. Some reports blame lack of intel, but face it, in war, shit happens. Sometimes, when you're unlucky, shit happens to you. Given the stresses and mission our fighting men and women have, they have a stellar record for survival. Still, there are losses. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
