2121 - Good evening. A thought just crossed my mind: Redundant Array of Inexpensive Planets. I might be able to sell the Profit of Doom, Al Gore, on the concept. Instead of fragile single planets, something you can count on to recover, even if Al has hitched his wagon to the wrong glacier. Speaking of which, we're getting down into the 50's overnight, and while high's are supposed to be 80's, it didn't get out of the 70's today. And we haven't had a 100 degree day this year. Weird. It definitely feels like mid-late September, not mid-August. Nothing else to report. Ciao!

Was a plumber in a previous life |
2035 - Good evening. Warmer today, mid-80's but we still have the house open. It's cheaper (people's summer utilities around here range from mid 300's to over a thousand, we're fortunately closer to the former), and really much nicer than the stale smell of a closed-up house. When I got home, I applied today's Black Tuesday patches from Microsoft to Marcia's laptop. It's important, there are exploits out RIGHT NOW for at least one of the vulnerabilities, so if you run Windows, patch now. It worked fine for me at work, and on Marcia's box. No arrows. I also, finally, fixed the wired network connection between my office and Marcia's. I unscrewed the small patch plate before painting, a few weeks back, and when I was done, the network didn't work anymore. With wireless, it's easy to put such a chore off. But I back up her box every night, and it's much better to be on wired gigabit ethernet than 54M wireless.
A friend recently ran into DotNet trouble. As each new version of the core application was installed, a new version of DotNet and dependent friends came along for the ride. Eventually, DotNetRot set in, where the app didn't work anymore, and the old versions couldn't be uninstalled before doing a clean 3.5 install. So the vendor came up with this: dotnetfx_cleanup_tool.zip. I have not used this myself, and don't hold me to blame if you try it and it deletes your data, dallies with your sheep, and sells your first-born into servitude. But it comes freshly tested from a trusted source. So, if it's useful to you, give it a try (preferably after backing up your system, neh?)
A light supper tonight: a bit of fresh fruit, and some cheese. You'll note that the pear I selected to be part of tonight's repast clearly was a plumber in a previous life. That thought nearly changed my menu planning, I must say. Now, on to whatever's next, either checking work email, or studying for my Final on Saturday morning.

Mmmm. Veggies. |
1058 - Good evening. Pretty nice for one evening's haul, eh? In other news, I finally got a decent remote login running via Ubuntu under Parallels here on the Mac. I'm trying to reach the point where I can keep the big system downstairs, and hold down the heat up here. There are a couple of tricks to that, though... I'll figure it out eventually. Meanwhile, bedtime. Ciao!

1813 - Good evening. Not much new to report. Yeah, it is Friday, but tomorrow's the Final for this session's course. So I've studying to do. Last night I did that, plus formatted Jerry's mailbag. So, there you go. I'm still on the fence about what to do next regarding school. On thst subject, I've gotten good feedback from a number of y'all, which I appreciate more than you'll ever know. Thanks!

2134 - Good evening. 100 questions. 40 minutes. I'm pretty sure I nailed it. The rest of the day went to yardwork - I wrapped that up just before four. Then we headed over to Columbia, where there was a fundraiser going on that we wanted to contribute to. Back home for a light dinner, and that's a wrap. Ciao!

1429 - Good afternoon. I've been down in the workshop, building a mockup of the face frame for the banker's shelves that I'll be building for my office one of these days. The thing I was working out in my head was how to manage the sliding/hinging of the doors for each shelf. I think I have it, but want to actually test it before committing the design to a bunch of expensive hardwood.
Another week, more fallen warriors. My pride in the performance of their hard duty is boundless. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
