2113 - Good evening. Hey, what happened to Monday? Things I'm waiting on: Grades on the most important work from the latest course - there's two papers and a Final. I submitted the paper on the 10th, and there it sits, unread and ungraded. I guess our group paper was read, but it wasn't submitted through the normal assignment channels, so I can't tell if the Prof has picked it up or not. Non-school facets of life are starting to pick up steam, though, so that's good. I also renewed my Usenix and Sage memberships for another year. Other than that, work is work and life is life. Ciao!

TouchTerm SSH client on the iPhone |
1105 - Good evening. Here's a little post for you, from a little computer. This definitely isn't the tool for writing the next great American novel, but it works just fine. I'm writing this courtesy of TouchTerm 2.0. I was waiting for this release because it does public key management and distribution by email. That's important, since I've been using key authentication and disabling password access on every machine I use. I was not particularly interested in compromising my security posture for the sake of convenience. Now I can admin bunches of boxes without carrying a computer everywhere. That's a big win! This probably slaughters battery life on the iPhone, but I can cope.
You can also tell (as I finish this post on the full size computer and keyboard) that it's easy to grab screenshots off the iPhone. I mailed it to myself, scaled, plunked, and off we go. You can click for the full-rez version, as usual.
Not much new to report. I racked a couple of new infrastructure boxes today. Tomorrow they'll be running RHEL 5.2 in as minimal a configuration as I can eke out, plus a couple of services. I also have a Perl/developer support project to work on, along with some system documentation. And all of that after arriving at work at 0700 to let in the blokes doing service on our fire suppression system. Time to sleep, now. Ciao!

2042 - Good evening. We're back to the unusually cool weather pattern, but still shy on rain for the month. Oh, hey. Marcia's posting again! Besides that, not much new to report. I'm not bored, but I'm not doing anything really interesting, and some of the interesting stuff I work on I'd have to obfuscate to the point of boredom. So there you go. Ciao!

1717 - Good afternoon. I got home yesterday afternoon to say "Hi!" to a sick puppy. Lucy, who was apparently in the pick of crochity old psycho spaniel health on Thursday night, was refusing all food (and water as far as Marcia could tell). The former's not a huge big deal, but the latter ... well, that's how Sally let us know it was time for her to go. When I got home, I tried tempting Lucy with some of the other dog foods that Marcia hadn't, or in different combinations. I was successful in getting a little food down, and I got her to take some water. So, no big deal. She clearly had an unhappy tummy, and some significant diarrhoeae as well. But a couple of rounds of that, then she ate about a one-third sized portion of her regular supper fare, and ate well at breakfast today. So, all's well.
Today, I did a few chores, and cut my hair. I'm still short on sleep, and that weighs on me a bit. I'm being unreasonably short with Marcia, it seems. I attribute the latter to the former. I plan on getting to bed early tonight.

2044 - Good evening. Shopping, salsa-making, and a couple episodes of Bab-5 were the high points of the day. Not much else to report.
I am at a mild loss for words. Regardless of how one feels about Bush's motives in Iraq, I believe that our fighting men and women are over there to try to bring freedom and safety (relative to their lives under Hussein) to the Iraqis. But the religious schisms that exist lead them only towards greater violence towards each other, and towards our troops. I honor the work our warriors do, out at the sharp end, but it's time for the policy wonks to decide if our continued sacrifice of blood and treasure in the sands of the cradle of civilization are worth the results likely to be acheived. If not, bring the men and women home. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
