1922 - It's warming up a bit. We broke over freezing for a few hours today, after a couple of days with highs in the 20's and lows in the teens (farenheit). Just as well, since there was a little problem with water in the area earlier today. I'm not sure about that 150 million gallons a minute number, seems a bit high to me. That's 2.5 million gallons a second, or about 9,500 cubic meters of water per second. Even out of a 66" pipe that seems rather a lot. Okay, doing a bit of math says that since the area of a 66" pipe is 2.2 square meters, the length of a cubic meter column of water is 0.45 meters. To get 9,500 cubic meters out of that pipe, the water speed appears to be 4,318 meters per second, or 9,600 miles per hour. Okay, here's another way of looking at it. A VLCC supertanker can carry ~60 million gallons of oil. So we're talking a supertanker full every 24 seconds or so. That pipe must have been built from Unobtaineum. I'm going to call bullshit on 150 million gallons per minute.

Oh, hey. I got another A. Go me. Time to relax, now. Another workday tomorrow, but hopefully fairly quiet as the place empties out a bit for Christmas eve. Ciao!

1822 - Happy Christmas eve to all. We're having a nice quiet night in. Tomorrow, more of the same, with any luck. Ciao!

1558 - Merry Christmas, all, if you so celebrate. We have had a pleasant slow-motion day, starting with a sleep-in, some freshly roasted Brazillian coffee, and the unwrapping of stuff from under the tree. Even the dogs had a present from Tae, a friend from work. After reading and noshing for several hours, Marcia went up to work on a quilt for a while, and I decided to muck about in Warcraft for a while. Whoops!

The external case-insensitive drive that I used for WoW is toast. I don't mean that literally, but something's wrong with the disk formatting - I probably undocked without unmounting the drive first, one too many times. While there are for-pay programs that might have recovered the disk, it's just as easy for me to reinstall. This time, since my drive is now a 320G instead of a 111G, I used the beginning bits of the Boot Camp Assistant to repartition the drive. Then I terminated that, and re-fettled the partition into an HFS+ Journalled filesystem. The main partition is case-sensitive, and several things (including World of Warcraft) don't seem to be comfortable knowing that there's a difference between upper- and lower-case alphas. Anyway, the initial disk install is done, and now there's a couple of hours of online patching in front of me - multiple gigs worth. Now, back downstairs for some more reading. Ciao!

1252 - Progress is. I've almost got all of WoW reinstalled - the Wrath of the Lich King expansion is going in now. Meantime Rich and Lorrie are boarding a plane to come visit. So, expect sparse to non-existent posts for the next few days. It depends on free time, etc. Whoops! Now WoW launcher. Woo-hoo. Ciao!

2020 - Feeling vaguely unwell at the moment, but... How did I miss Victory in Iraq Day? I guess that I was one of the fence-sitters, too, waiting for someone to say we won, or worse, for something heinously bad to happen. Winning is good though. Our troops rock, which is how it happened.

We travelled today, heading out to Ocean City and back. A nice gray day, no rain, but feeling wiped out and hoping it's neither a bug nor something I ate. Will see what the future brings, I guess. Ciao!

Mon    Tues    Wed    Thu    Fri    Sat    SUNDAY
December 28, 2008

1709 - We went down to DC today, and visited most of the major memorials with Rich and Lorrie. Lunch at the Castle Cafe at the Smithsonian, then back home for supper.

While this week's news is less pleasant than last week's, I still want to point out Victory in Iraq Day. I mean, sure, November 22, 2008, is an arbitrary date, but no one else seems likely to declare the winner... However, fighting continues, and lives are given in service to our country. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
