2059 - Good evening. Regular Monday foo. Oh, heh. Started following @bashcookbook on that newfangled Twitter thing. I really should start finding some way to contribute more to that flow. I'd rather be a net producer than a net consumer. On the school front, I'm waiting for an answer from Advising on a couple of different topics, we'll see what comes, there. Not much else to report, I've got a firewall policy push to do, then test. Ciao!

2052 - So I got an out of office reply to an email today. That, in itself, is fairly unremarkable. That it's from the bloke assigned to be my undergraduate adviser is less appealing, but that happens. That the out-of-office reply came back to me a full six days after I sent the message warms my cockles not at all. Now I have to make a phone call tomorrow, and try to get stuff taken care of that I thought was already in process. And that's after climbing into the dentist's chair at 0700. Nothing major there, just the periodic cleaning. Ciao!

2030 - Barely a post. After all, other than being really, really cold (outside), there isn't much to report. I worked on computers, signed up for a really basic CMIS class that I need to take the one CMIS upper division class that's required for my degree track, and tried to stay warm. That's all there is of interest at the moment, and really it's only interesting to me, mostly. But thanks for dropping by ... oh, wait! I remember. I told you I was going to experiment with Avant Window Navigator. Unfortunately, anything that want to present itself as providing an OS X style experience, whether in Linux or anywhere else, had better be pretty polished. This wasn't. Probably worth checking back on in a year or so, though, as the price stays right. Now, ciao!

1800 - A quiet afternoon. I caught up on nearly the entire stack of reading, leaving just a Smithsonian and SciAm to scull through at my leisure (soon, before the stack starts building again). I also roasted the next week's coffee. I continue to be happy with my descent into this latest hobby - in the long term it's about the same price as the cheaper brands of pre-roasted beans from the store, but with much better flavor.
Slartibartfast hung up again today. That's the main Linux workstation/home server. It's done that three times or more over the last couple of months. I really don't need a more powerful machine, but I do need reliability ... Instead of going for a hot new Nehalem quad-core CPU, I might look at what else is out there, and cost-reduce the unit a bit. Probably not, though, until it does this to me one more time.
In the meantime, the Windows 7 beta failed to boot properly on the other Athlon 64 box I have. I have no idea why - it installed just fine, it seemed. But as the boot process progressed, it would stop, then reboot the machine - endless loop time. So I'm pulling down OpenSuse 11 right now, just to have something different to play with. I haven't mucked with Suse in a number of years. Now ... to feed the dogs. Ciao!

2106 - We just finished watching the "opening ceremony" for Obama's inauguration. Nice show. Pretty words, we'll see how well they're implemented. Nice strong military presence at the event - please to see how much honor the Obama team accords our troops!
A rougher week, this time. Afghanistan continues to ramp up in violence as Iraq winds down, and our service members keep giving their all for our nation, for our commitments and their honor. I am humbled. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
