Chrissie and the boys |
1836 - Well, I had a good reason for not posting last night:Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders played at the 9:30 Club last night. We were there courtesy of our local Classic Rock err World Music err Classic Rock station, 94.7 The Globe. More on them in a minute. I called in twice, got through both times, and won tickets from Cerphe on the second try. The upside: It was a great show. The opening act, American Bang, out of Memphis Nashville (sorry about that), was a lot of fun, a bunch of talented guys. The soundboard didn't give the vocals enough juice, though.. When the Pretenders came on, and Chrissie broke into song, I could tell. She's lost none of her talent or her vocal skills. An absolutely rockin' show, three encores! We got out about 2320, and home just after midnight. The downside: 9:30 has a great club, in a slightly downmarket neighborhood. We couldn't park in the secured lot because they were sold out in presales. And the guy said, "Don't park south of that street [one block south], if you like windows in your car." Ummmm... Okay. Fortunately, we found ONE space I could squeeze the truck into on the same street about a quarter block away, not too bad. I will ensure that I get parking tix in advance though, for any future visits to that venue. I took a few pictures from the upper balcony where we settled ourselves, but really, the iPhone camera is crap. Sorry about that.
I said I'd come back to The Globe. They're a CBS property with one big plus: Cerphe (Don Colwell) is one of the best radio rock DJ's around. He's been in that gig for ... a bunch of years, starting back at WHFS back in '69. I've not had the pleasure of meeting him, but I've chatted on the phone with him a few times and he's exceedingly knowledgable and pleasant. The Globe went through a Green/World Music/Adult Alternative branding phase that lasted for nearly two years before CBS pulled the plug on that format and dropped back to Classic Rock. It's too bad, really. I enjoyed the World Music/Adult Alternative format a lot - it reminds me of my BFF KFOG - and I could tolerate the Greenie-weenie crap as a result. The Classic Rock/CBS format isn't terrible, but it doesn't have nearly the depth that it should. Thanks, CBS! </sarcasm>
I have plenty more to get done tonight, so I'll bid you adieu. Ciao!

Lucy headshot |
2048 - A productive day. My TPS report was full of useful tasks accomplished today, mostly mundane. Still, it feels good to knock some items off the ToDo list. In other news, it seems that I'll be doing a bit of consult with some of the folks I worked with while I was at The Nerds Group. Short-life gig, less than a week overall, but nice that they asked for me.
What do you think of Lucy's headshot? I caught one a while back as she lay in the doorway between my office and the hall. I certainly think she can use it to kick the door down and get into auditions at any entertainment capital in the world. The linked image is a bit larger than usual, but there've been requests, you see. Since the dentist visit, we had her off to doggy day spa for a bath and trim. When her coat is too thick, in the winter, she'll stay outside all day and ignore Marcia's pleas to come inside. So the haircut is useful. In the summer, a short coat keeps her from suffering in the heat (and Marcia doesn't worry about outside dogs when the temps are over 50).
We were supposed to get some snow, but that hardly happened, and it's too warm to stick, besides. The forecast doesn't look hopeful for another snow day in the next couple of weeks, but one never knows.
Hey. Are you a fan of big datasets? Check out Public Data Sets on AWS. On the other hand, if you want a good laugh, check out this ethernet cable. Yow! Ciao!

1051 - Time to finish the house cleaning, so that another project can be started. Later...
2010 - I assembled a couple of endpanels for a project, after finishing with the cleaning. Also yummy was the pizza (I ate too much), and the beginning of Juggler of Worlds, a Niven book that I'd forgotten that I picked up before the holidays. It disappeared under a stack of stuff, and was excavated today. Huzzah!

1742 - Today: assembling a new storage footstool for my office. The big bits are all in place now. The lid, which will get a cushion top, is cut, and the box is assembled and clamped up for drying. I need a 20" piano hinge and four non-slip feet for hardware, plus there's sanding and finishing to be done to the box. I got back to that project after washing the truck, since it was 65° F out, by noon. Linda's over and I'm doing a chicken stir fry for supper, momentarily.
The soldiers who died defusing a roadside bomb haven't been "announced" as casualties yet, on the DoD site. There were two casualties reported this week, but both of those were non-combat-related. This is the first time that's happened since I started making the time each Sunday to take note, and to honor our fallen. To the families and units of the men who died, our condolences.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
