Building a big box |
1941 - I snapped that image with my iPhone while installing RHEL 5.3 x86_64 on some new hardware. Attached to the computer in question is a fully loaded MD1000 SAS storage array. That explains why Red Hat is attempting to present me with a 14 terabyte Logical Volume Group. No, not precisely how I wanted it configured. And there's too much waste: I'm much happier with them still in JBOD mode, but formatted as ext3 with sparse superblocks and no 5% space reservation for root. Shiny. I've got some more configuration to do, but it'll make a fine backup staging server.
Some of the Monday evening stuff is done, and I've more to do, then school work. I continue to be a thorn in every instructor's side. This time, the instructor said that there was stuff that couldn't be done with C++'s cout function. Um, says I, raising my virtual hand...
Here's a code fragment from the Working the Chapter Example post that I put up in Week 3:
""" // set precision, and use the fixed modifier to display dollars cout.precision(2); cout << "The price in US dollars is $" << fixed << DollarPrice << endl; """
That's how you get the decimal places right using cout, thanks to my friend Google for helping me out with that.
And of course, the bottom line is that it doesn't matter. cout
functionality is irrelevant to the point of the exercises in question. But I can't keep my mouth shut (err, fingers still), sometimes. So there you go. Sorry about that. Now, time to get back to chores, etc. Ciao!

Building Marcia a new sewing table |
2129 - Why? Because I was busy. Along with everything else, I've been making progress on Marcia's new sewing table. It's inverted right now, on the table saw. I've put the edging all around the table surface, eased all the outward-facing sharp bits with a 3/16 radius roundover bit, and given things a first sanding. Once I turned it over, I started assembling and installing the leg mounts underneath the table. The legs are all cut to length, and just set into place for this shot.
Beyond that, and work, and school, I haven't really had time to catch up with anything. Wierd news abounds. Natasha Richardson dying from a fall that hit ... nothing? Be interesting to know, if we ever do, what really happened. IBM in talks to buy Sun? Wow, Scott McNealy must be spinning in his grave! I'm told that Scott McNealy is not, actually, dead. I must have confused him with Keef. Kayne West arrested for assault, too. Oh, hey, that isn't news, that's a recurring sequel. Dude, get a grip.
Tired now, I've got to catch up on things before I turn in. Ciao!

2053 - Yow! Zippy says that life is good. I'm continuing to be as busy as possible, I think (in the context of larger events) that's a very good thing. Now to go do the dishes. Oh, hey: Brian, on the Ubuntu workstation, for the win: PDF Editor. Thanks, Michal, Jozef, and Martin and all the other folks involved!!! Ciao!

2133 - And mostly no signal, too. Almost everyplace in Grand Rapids lacks an AT&T signal of any kind, including in the nicest hotel in town. There were a couple of bars at the place we stayed (the Radisson just off the Ann Street exit from 131, yay Radisson!). But the rest of the burg was a black hole for my iPhone. Oh, well. We had a lovely, if short visit. We saw Matt and Sarah wed, and hung out with tens, hundreds (Tens of hundreds? Seems like it) of relatives: a good time was had by all. However, we're going to have to start having relaxing vacations, rather than go-go-go trips.
I got Jerry's mailbag formatted and posted just now. Tired, think I'll call it a night. Ciao!
[2009.03.27 - Edited into this page by reader request.] Speaking of bringing to attention, I neglected my duty on Sunday last. Six casualties were announced last week, six service members who made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen. They are:

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
