2240 - Whoops! The week got off on a confusingly wrong foot when I awoke to find 60° F temps outside at 0600 on Monday morning. 36 hours later we were having snow flurries. The temps haven't come up much, and we're due for ... snow on Saturday, 70% likely. School and work have eaten nearly every free minute, which isn't an entirely bad thing, but I like the chance to slow down and reflect a little bit, here and there. On the other hand, some things don't appear to be worth reflecting on. The new iThing turns out to be an iPad - no expandable memory, iffy battery life, still no Flash. As my friend Rob said, "The iPad. More absorbent! With wings!"

And the phone just rang. That was my friend and one-time mentor Mark letting me know that a guy instrumental in putting lives back on track (and helped me a lot with mine), Sylvester Herring, had passed away. Given what I understand to be the state of his health, that was probably a blessing. Still, it's sad when folks depart this plane.

Past my bedtime, ciao!

2043 - Just now winding up into the schoolwork. Busy day, busy early evening. Made a run to the Amish market nearby ... too late. Different close times on Thursday and Friday nights, argh! I have 75 things I want to work on, but school comes before all of them. So, I must go, ciao!

2148 - Well, I'm caught up on my schoolwork for the moment, so I managed to finish reading Charles Stross's Halting State. It cuts back and forth between character viewpoints like an MTV video, and I found that distracting enough that it was hard to get into the book. But by the midpoint on, it was a great fun read. A bit of cyber punk set in near-future Scotland, Halting State gets 37 mutant penguins.

I would say that the work week is done, but no, it isn't. Russ and I are working on some infrastructure maintenance on Sunday morning for a few hours, hopefully nothing too disruptive in nature. I also plan on making at least a little more progress on the remodel, and a bit of head-start on the CMIT class, Windows Networking Infrastructure, which starts in earnest on Monday. Now, be off with you. Ciao!

2215 - Well, today was different than expected. The storm that was supposed to miss us, well to the south, with maybe a flurry or two winging our way ... changed direction. The winter storm warning now says 4-7 inches of accumulation through 0400 tomorrow morning. Given that we were at 6 inches at 1700 this evening, I'd have to say, more like 7-9 inches at our place. Marcia had an appointment, so I took Molly to get her nails trimmed, just as the storm was getting going. When Marcia returned, we went together to do the weekend shopping. People driving like, um, special people. Stop in the middle of the road, scared. Grrrr. Made it home safe and sound though. A bit of cleaning, a haircut, a bunch of reading about the news of the day, like Amazon delisting Macmillan, or the Beeb calling Americans dumbasses. Going to bed a bit early, since I want to be relatively awake for tomorrow morning's work at the office. Ciao!

1946 - A productive day, but less than I imagined. Work went well, in and out in under three hours. Back, I puttered around a bit, then managed some initial cleanup of the trim in the two room remodel with a chisel and a sanding block. The next steps are to take out the carpets, pads and tack strip, then finish preparing the trim. Thereafter, I can prime everything, and decide what still needs work. A quick re-prime, then the rooms will be ready for color. But instead of taking out carpet this afternoon, I took a nap. Unlike me, truly, but I must have needed it. I also helped Marcia with a stew, and picking some fabrics/colors for a quilt she's making. And there's my day in a nutshell. Oh, yeah, the snow: no more than another inch overnight, so I'll call it at 7" total here. Not worth shoveling again, today. The sun was out, and the bits that mattered (driveway, sidewalks) cleared on their own. Yay!

Another week, another seven fine warriors gave their lives for the policies of our country. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
