0754 - Lexi decided that 0530 was a good time to wake up, and Molly found 0600 was a fine time to throw up. It's about to be Memorial Day for dogs, too! Provided I can rustle up the energy, I'm going to do front yard work today, flowers and such. I wonder how that plan is gonna go? Ciao!

2131 - I stopped briefly at the Memorial Day ceremony at the Vietnam Vets memorial, in Old Town Bowie. Although I said so yesterday, it bears repeating: Every day is Memorial Day, because hardly a day goes by that I don't think of the men and women who fight and sometimes die for America.very day is Memorial Day, because hardly a day goes by that I don't think of the men and women who fight and sometimes die for America. Thanks!

I did get most of the flowers installed today. Lucky me, picking the warmest day in a week to do such work, and on the afternoon sun side of the house, too. Linda was over to supper - I grilled a filet of wild salmon (so claimed), and it was yummy. Tomorrow, I've got to briefly water everything again before I leave for work. In the evening, I'll get the watering systems setup again. Now, time to keep hydrating, and rest. Ciao!

2200 - Yesterday, when I got home, I mulched in the front flower beds that I planted in on Monday. Whew! Tonight, half of the watering setup is done - the front half. The back yard needs some re-configuration before I can bring it online, so I'll do that over the next two nights. Meantime we've got a storage vendor rep in for a couple of days to help us understand what, why, and how for the demo systems we have in house right now. That's enough excitement, eh?

0909 - It turns out that Thursday was a bad evening for working on the vegetable garden watering systems: lightning, thunder, and intermittently torrential rains. Plus I was bloody tired after 10 hours of meetings and such during the day, so I took the evening off. Last night, I put on my indoor plumbing hat, instead of working outside.

Delta transfer valve assembly
Delta transfer valve assembly

At least, I think it's called a transfer valve assembly. Water control fixture? Anyway, last year I noticed when trying to bathe a dog in that bathroom I remodelled in February, 2+ years ago, that the hot water wasn't working in the shower/tub anymore. And there it sat, since there's only us upstairs, and the guest suite was in the basement. Now that we've flipped the organization top for bottom, and the guest room is on the second floor, hot water in the guest shower becomes a more pressing need, especially since we've got company coming in about 10 days.

Rather than just call a plumber, I decided to give the work a shot myself, first, after putting it off for months. I was able to shut the water off at the incoming valves at each side of the assembly. Then I loosened and removed the fitting to right of the central valve. That's a mechanical pressure compensation widget, so that when a toilet is flushed, the hot water supply pressure is adjusted to match the cold, reducing incidence of scalding. I then ran a trickle of water from each source, successfully. So clearly it's not a supply problem - the valve assembly also contained the problem. I used pressurized air to blow out the pressure compensator, and reassembled it into the valve body. Then I removed the central valve assembly, and re-tried my trickle test. Still no water. Hmmm. After poking about a bit, I decided that even though it didn't look clogged, the pressure compensator must be the culprit. So I removed it from the housing again, and performed percussive maintenance on it. Yay! The sliding cylinder in the center *was* stuck in a position where the hot water was blocked entirely.

In the state of the shower at the time the picture above right was taken, reassembly and testing is completed, leak-free. Once that was done, I cleaned up the outside, replaced the valve cover and handle, then caulked the cover to the tile, and recaulked the tub filler below, since it needed touch-up.

Today, garden watering system, for sure, starting in mere moments. Before an acute lazy attack happens. Seriously. Ciao!

2153 - Yesterday was successful: watering systems all up and operational. Today, shopping, mowing, roasting, and a lovely supper at a neighbor's house up the street. Great fun. By the time next Sunday ends, we'll have been publicly social three weeks in a row. That just about equals the last three years in total. Huh.

Let me just say, No Mosque at Ground Zero. More importantly, our condolences to the families and units of these fallen warriors:

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
