60 board feet |
1940 - Good evening. I'm working half days a few days this week for a number of reasons. Among them is getting some Fall chores and other stuff done before school starts in earnest on the twentieth. Additionally, I've been busy with some cleaning, both around the house, in the yard, and down in my woodshop. In the latter, I took delivery today of 60 board feet of walnut, cherry, and hard maple. Project time is coming up - I actually did the first glue-up for a coffee table project I've been procrastinating on for Russell for the last ... um, year?
I'll have pictures of that project up once I'm done with it and Russ has it in hand. Before then — I wouldn't want to give away the design surprise.
We had some rain on Sunday, yay. But no more in the forecast for a while - that's becoming a problem. Everything's pretty dry around here, although not mowing the lawns has a certain attractive quality about it.
I'm also thinking about getting a proper camera, perhaps the new Nikon D3100. I think I'll hold off for a few real customer reviews before deciding for sure. But it'll be a nice addition to our capabilities around here - I take acceptable pictures, but the sensors and optics in the current cameras are nothing to write home about. I think I'd like to do more on the photography front, and this seems like a good step without spending multiple thousands of dollars. Other recommendations are, of course, welcome.
Now it's suppertime. Ciao!

2218 - Half a day's work, half a day working in the woodshop downstairs. The number one thing I learned today: my tablesaw doesn't like working with hardwoods of any reasonable thickness. My walnut glueup came in at about 7/4 and I had to be bloody careful with the feed rate to keep the saw from bogging down far enough to blow the breaker. I think that if I continue doing furniture and such that I'll have to get a proper tablesaw and a 30-amp 220 circuit installed for it. I did get all my rip cuts done, then jointed the sawn surfaces to even things out and to make all three pieces the same width (important for joinery in the corners, better to be right to start then to fudge things later). Finally, I routed out in the top inlay groove. I'll prep for that glue-up, and lay out, then cut the legs on this upcoming weekend. Depending on the pacing of my first class, I might have this piece done before the end of October. Ciao!

1952 - Busiest ... but done for the day. I did the shopping, sanded and applied the first coat of danish oil to the banding pieces, after gluing them up and machining them over the last couple of days. I mowed in front, washed my car, did some in-house cleaning, grilled a bunch of burgers and hot dogs for meals for us over the next few days, etc. Fall session at UMUC officially starts for me today. A second class gets rolling in the first week of October.
Our condolences to the families and units of these fallen warriors:
