MONDAY    Tues    Wed    Thu    Fri    Sat    Sun

2203 - I know. It's not the end of the world, though. I just employed a few extra monkeys today. Other than the normal Monday stuff, that's all the news there is. At that, it's still more news than I see on the "news" sites mostly, or even from people who should now better, like professional organizations. The "news" from one of those email bulletins today had this as a lead item: Engineering, Computer-Science Pay More Than Liberal Arts. People get paid to provide that sort of revelation? I'm in the wrong business, dudes and dudettes.

However, that pales beside the sort of crap that shows up on CNN. I'm showing my age when I refer to the part of a web page that appears on the screen without having to scroll the browser as being "above the fold", but here's what passes for news, above the fold on CNN right now: What makes a video go viral? Sean Penn on Haiti: It's bad. Sandra Lee: 5 hosting tips for Halloween. It's that middle one that really gets me. He's listed as "Sean Penn, Activist" Um, what? How about actor? Is there anything that an actor won't latch onto to ensure the name and the face stay in front of the camera? Not that I'm blaming him, that's his gig, man. But news? Seriously? And six of the top 12 "Latest news" stories are about murders, killings, or murder trials. How representative of the state of our lives.

Now this, this is news: Sony retires the cassette Walkman after 30 years. I still remember my first Walkman. On the other hand, three of the people in my department weren't alive when Sony introduced the Walkman. So, there's a sobering thought. Yikes. Ciao!

2246 - Why not? I had a midterm last night: 125 questions from half of the domains in the CISSP. That's more than enough for an evening, although I finished fairly quickly, and I really had until Monday night next to turn it in. But being ahead of the game is good. Tonight, I did some writing and some reading for the Writing class. Nothing else to report. Ciao!

2249 - Sorry about that, I've been a bit busier than usual. Papers and work and midterms, oh my! Anyway, plenty of chores done around here this weekend, and I've just finished formatting and posting Jerry's Mailbag for October. Now I'm pretty whacked, but first...

Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen warriors reported by DoD this week. Our thanks go out, too, all those who honor us and protect our country by their service.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
