2059 - Jerry unexpectedly popped out a mailbag tonight, following a Final on the column last night. So I've been busy, and I still have schoolwork to do. So sorry, back again soon. Oh, hey. Instead, go buy your copy of Building the Perfect PC. You know you want to! Ciao!

2235 - I see that I put yesterday's post into today. Go me. Also yesterday I upgraded this here box from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to 10.10. Fine, though it took a few hours, and didn't finish until this evening when I said "Go" to the last few steps. Upgraded lots of stuff ... including Bluefish, my preferred HTML/PHP editor. How upgraded? Hmmm, with the old config, it didn't work right. So I have to do some serious manual configuration to get my setup back. Grrr. But it was a major version bump, and the colorizing is MUCH better, and better behaved.

It's a few minutes later, and after a brief turn with the documentation, I was able to import my old custom settings into the new "snippets" architecture of bluefish 2.x. And this is a LOT faster. Now, to figure out how to mod the Quick Bar ... Okay, got that figured out, too. Time to retire, before the phone rings again. Yep, I'm on call. Ciao!

2117 - Almost 9PM as these keys bottom out, and I still don't know what I want for dinner. I've got an RHEL 6 DVD burning over on Darla the MacBook Pro, and I've been doing some tuning to my Ubuntu Maverick desktop. In the background, I've got Montrose's eponymous 1973 album pouring out of the speakers.

As it does, I recall that I've got short attention span problems, the last few years. One bit of evidence is that I haven't listened to a whole album in a long, LONG time. This is partly caused by the death of sequential music media. Yes, you know and I know that the tracks are in the same order, whether they were on vinyl, 8-track, cassette, or CD. But with the CD, skipping tracks became trivial. Now, with digital music, it's hard to know when to stop skipping about. In my Audacious main playlist, I have 2100 hours of music. That's a hair over 120 continuous days of music. Yes, there are some repeats - if I cleaned it up, I could probably knock that down to 116 days worth. I usually set it to random, which means that I'll hear AC/DC, followed by Mozart, followed by Buckethead, then to ZZ Top, on and on, one track at a time. It's a bit of a psychotic life soundtrack. Lately I've been trying to make the effort to listen to whole albums. I do that here by turning off the random when the music hits the right chord with me, and start with the first track of the album I'm currently playing from. And on the iPhone, my mobile iTunes playlists are all albums - I didn't do any track cherry-picking. That way I get deep tracks from the artists that I wanted to listen to when I created the playlists.

In other music-related news, I was having supper last night when one of the new Hyundai commercials flew past in DVR fast-forward mode. I asked Marcia to back it up - it's the first I've seen on TV of the Pomplamoose holiday-themed Hyundai ads actually featuring Jack and Natali. You heard their voices covering Mister Sandman on the Toyota - I'm happy that they are drawing attention and income without having to "sell out" by changing their fun style. Rock on!

Oh, hey. I'm getting hungry, and that DVD is burnt. Ciao!

1026 - Busy all day yesterday and much of the day today, too, doing work stuff. Unrelated items, but both a PITA in their own special ways. Of course, the really painful one was all my fault. Partially my fault, anyway. Oh, yeah, and a new video card today for me, since my Radeon card isn't well supported anymore. The open source driver works well for most of the shizzle, but X-Plane 9 really doen't like have industrial 3D performance. So a new nVidia card is the ticket, and works like a champ. Now, before I keel over ...

Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
