2145 - Work and school, school and work. And now I've got 8" of snow on the ground. Mostly it's laying on top of 1.5" of slurpee snot that drained out of the sky during the day. This evening, early, I shovelled off the driveway and sidewalks, just to get the heavy stuff off while there wasn't a big load on top. 5 or so inches have fallen since then, and we have 3 or 4 hours left before this system departs. Um, yay? I'm thinking snow thrower tomorrow morning, before work. Meantime, from the massive scraping noise, I discern that the plough has finally made it onto our street. That's a definite yay. Time to unwind and wait for the power to go out again... Ciao!

1808 - First, walk the dog. Back in a bit...

2115 - Then schoolwork, and supper, and walking the dog again. What a week. Shortly after Wednesday night's post, the power did go out again. And it stayed out for 15 hours or so. We just went to bed, since the temps were below freezing, there was no real purpose to running the generator overnight. The fridges would all be fine in dropping temps, and the sump was stable. But by 0700, with the weather warming up to 36 or so, it was time to get that sump pump running. So I fired up the generator, and got the first cord run down to the sump. The second cord ran the coffee pot until that was done, then ran the kitchen fridge. I got the freezer running, and then used the snow blower to clear sidewalks and driveways. As I finished that up, I saw Chet across the street failing to start his snowblower. That was sad, so I lent him mine.

With that done, I thought again, and hooked up the network gear to the generator. Now, I could get Marcia online so that she could work. Afterwards, I wandered back over to talk to Chet while he finished up. He showed me his setup, which involved plugging the generator into a dryer receptacle in his basement, and (with the mains breaker switched off) running his house with the generator and no tangle of extension cords. Better yet, I suddenly noticed the sounds of furnace running. Since our house was getting cold, THAT sounded like a win.

I wandered back home and looked at my setup. Mains breaker on the panel: check. Dryer socket - check, but not the right kind. Hmmm. The generator has a NEMA14-30R twistlock receptacle. I pulled the dryer socket, and found the unused ground wire capped off in the box. Yay! Off to Home Depot I hared, and came back with receptacle, two plugs (one to mate with the new receptacle, one to mate with the generator, and fifty feet of 10 gauge 3-wire plus ground. Forty five minutes later, I had the house running off our generator, and I was spooling all the extension cords back up. The extension and wiring and sockets stayed cool, so I wasn't overloading the setup. I finished just in time to jump on a conference call for work. A couple of hours after that, a neighbor let us know that the power was back on (the one downside to this solution is that there's no way to know when the street power is back).

So that was Thursday, exhausting more because I didn't sleep much the night before. Today was just another working day. Oh, yeah. The picture. Well, someone hated the other one, so I changed it out. I hope it suits. Now, g'night.

2028 - I did nothing useful or productive yesterday. That's a darn shame. Today, reading for school, some cooking, some shopping and Jerry's mailbag pretty well ate my day.

Only one casualty to relate this week, from the DoD site. That's a bit of a surprise, I don't think the number's dropped to one since I started my weekly reporting of our losses in these conflicts. Our condolences to Tech. Sgt. William's family, and to the 4th Maintenance Group from Seymour Johnson AFB.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
