2138 - Good evening. It's been a Monday, that's for sure. Successful, though, in my endeavours. And better yet, I've got an appointment with an orthopedic guy (the one who did Marcia's second knee) on Thursday. From the continued pain and increased crackling in my right shoulder, there's probably something wrong in there. Sigh. Okay, on to happier topics. A question on one of the mailing lists came up about how to determine the correct device parameter for commandline CD burning with cdrecord. Here's what I wrote:
Did you actually try to run cdrecord -scanbus, as recommended by the output?
Depending upon how your kernel is configured to boot (look to the /boot/grub/grub.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst file), the burner device may be configured as SCSI (using the hdx=ide-scsi boot parameter) or not. Additionally, are you sure that the burner in the new laptop is actually at /dev/hdb? I've seen a lot of those where the HD is /dev/hda, and the burner is on the other IDE chain, at /dev/hdc.
So, run `cdrecord -scanbus` at the command line. If a burner shows up in the output on (for example) 0,0,0 on the scsibusN:, then the correct dev paramter will be:
dev=0,0,0
If no scsi burner device shows up from that first run, try this: run `cdrecord dev=ATAPI: -scanbus` (mind that colon). If your burner shows up in THAT output (say, as 0,0,0 again AND say scsibus, but ATAPI above that, confusingly), then the dev device parameter should be this:
dev=ATAPI:0,0,0
Please note though, that this simply makes your device parameter match the output of the scanbus check, making things easier to debug when something goes wrong. I can confirm that my burner, on /dev/hdc, does work properly with
dev=/dev/hdc
in the cdrecord line.
I didn't know that last bit, as the cdrecord docs are all talk about the "bus, target, lun" nomenclature from the SCSI side of the world, and that's what I've stuck with. It's always good to learn something new.
Now for a little more food to go with the ibuprofen, and then I'll try to sleep, as I only got about 3 solid hours last night, between sleeping in so late on Sunday and the old shoulder. Maybe I'm just getting old. Or NOT! Ah, well, have a good evening.

2053 - Hullo. I knew it. I'm definitely feeling better since we made that doctor's appointmenf for me. But I'm equally certain that the doc should check out my shoulder. If there's something wrong, I'd rather not be regretting a pass, ten years down the road. Other than that, the day went fine. I've got a number of things on tap for tomorrow, if only I can get a good night's rest, finally. Reading tonight: Sigmet Active, another retelling of the angry Gaia striking back at bad humans story, with storms having electrically imprinted on humans who caused harm. Now lightning seeks them out, actively, to remedy the "imbalance". I'm half through it now, trying for a goal line finish before I crap out for the evening. Have a good 'un!

2135 - Hola. I've been busy, researching notebooks and related stuff for related people. Gosh, by comparison with what a body can do for desktop machines, the customizability of notebooks really sucks, eh? And it's virtually impossible, as a consequence, to compare apples to apples, or even to other fruit. It's like comparing apples to manganese nodules to the Babel Fish. But I did my best.
The shoulder and arm are getting better. That's not going to keep me from the doctor, though. There was enough pain for an extended period that I'd be stupid to not have it checked out. So I'll work half-day tomorrow, then head over to the doc and see what he says.
Mark wanted to know, in setting up the mail server, what comes next after using mysqladmin to set the password. Well, then you type:
mysql -u root -p
... and after entering the password you set with the mysqladmin command, you've got the mysql>
prompt and can go forth to conquer the next problem. I sure hope my email delineating that reply got through.
I still haven't had much supper, I'd best do that before I start losing strength. Have a great evening!

2231 - Evenin' ... Results: one bruised/traumatized-but-likely-to-heal-just-fine rotator cuff. The nerve and muscle issues in the forearm should also resolve fine over time. I'll be going back for another check in about 4 weeks, but meantime, all's well as long as the pain continues to diminish.
Additionally, we're going to see The Seagull. Marcia's friend's husband is acting in the Chehkov play - we'll catch the Sunday matinee showing, then go out to an early supper with them before he heads back to the theatre for the evening performance. But first there's the Friday to get through, and I'm tired. I'll probably dress nicely tomorrow so I don't slouch about so much - I feel ever so much more alert in non-jeans, is that true for you, too?
Alright, time to roll into bed. G'night.

1845 - Hello. I've been keeping busy at a number of pursuits. Marcia's pictures and curtains are now up in her office. The yards front and back are mowed (why, oh why do I always want to write "moe'd" as in Larry and Curly???). I've done some trial installs of both OpenBSD and FreeBSD. Following the directions, I achieved a good install of OpenBSD, secured it (by locking down all network connections except SSH, then denying root access and password logins) and started playing with the ports system, which is where it all went horribly wrong. I'll make another try there shortly. On the FreeBSD side, I got another good install, but need to redo things for better results. In both cases, there are lots and lots of FM's to RT. Then I popped on over to Dave's Blog-o'stuff, and found my way to this outcome:
More later, perhaps. Yeah, the arm/shoulder hurts a lot less than yesterday. Very freaking weird, if you ask me.

2226 - Good evening. It's a medium pain day, and the state of that appears to be related entirely to how I sleep - that is, some sleeping positions appear to latch things up rather nicely, others ease my predicament almost entirely. But overall, I sense progress, in a three-back, five-forward sort of way. So thanks!
We saw The Seagull this afternoon, at the Howard Community College Rep Stage. Nigel Reed (playing Trigorin) is the husband of Marcia's friend Linda, so that's the connection. It was an excellent staging of a difficult play. It's called a comedy, but while there are funny moments strewn throughout, those only exist to provide poignant relief from the grinding dispair in which each of the characters lives. There's nothing nice about unrequited love, even when it's just one couple. When it's bloody everybody in the show, there's only the little humorous interplay of language to keep the mood light enough that the audience doesn't suicide en masse. As I said, it's a difficult work and with all that, I enjoyed it immensely. Well acted and played for every bit of life that can be found in the drear scene that Chekhov sets. Recommended!
Between shopping, the show, and dinner afterward with Linda and Nigel, that pretty well ate the day. Thus endeth the week. See you tomorrow.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
