1843 - Good evening. The day started in a rush and kept up that way. I got to work and started putting things in order for a new hire starting today ... oh, um, well, tomorrow. Bummer, I won't be at work tomorrow, I'll be in the dentist's chair. So I got everything there as setup as I could. I took care of prep work for a likely shipment, got an RMA rolling, sent back another piece of equipment due for return, and generally had a reasonable day at closing "open tickets". So, with everything in order shortly after 1500 this afternoon, I made plans to bail out early, as I didn't want to start anything else, and have it lay fallow for a couple of days. That was a big mistake, as there was a truck fire on the Beltway, and a bad accident on Randolph Road. All roads lead to Hell. It was a 2:25 commute home. Sigh. Anyway, I've fed the dogs, and now it's time to pay bills, cross-cut shred a bunch of stuff, and get the trash out. Whew. No rest for the wicked -- I must have been bad. Have a great evening, be glad Monday's almost over.

1959 - Good evening. Have I mentioned that I'm pretty darn busy? Gosh, I'm sorry about the paucity of my posts these days, but there's lots on my plate. The best news, from my perspective, is that mostly my own systems are running like a well-oiled machine. I'm not having trouble with hardware, apps, nothing. That's not entirely true, of course. I have one real bitch to pitch about the UI on the home system, but no time to whine about it right now. More later. In the meantime, I found that I'd "volunteered" by reason of insanity to do actual full TR work for Bob's latest book, because I hate doing anything half-assed. Okay. So I got through all of Chapter 3 tonight already, with just a few significant comments, but I hope it helps him make it a better book. Now I'm going to have supper. See ya!

2139 - Good evening. Another busy weekday gone by, another chapter for Bob through TR. I configured and shipped out some eval equipment today, specified a couple of laptops for new folks coming on-board, and suffered from the geek-brain equivalent of an aneurysm trying to comprehend MS licensing schemes, whereby I can pay full price for XP licenses, and STILL need to purchase "Software Assurance" (where you're assured that MS will ship no new versions of software during the term of your agreement) in order to activate the freaking things. I hate, Hate, HATE Microsoft. Hate.
</me wipes flecks of foam from the corners of my mouth, and looks out to see how close the full moon is...>
Gosh, I wish I didn't have to have these licenses, but I do. I don't have to use them, but I do have to manage them, and make sure that the company stays legal. I'll do that, but I'll hate it.
Okay. See you tomorrow.

0629 - Good morning. It's not all computers and gardening around here. You'll recall that I was refinishing that table we got from my grandparents... Here it is. The stripping and the sanding and the staining, followed by Danish Oil and two coats of oil-based Polyurethane have really brought this piece of furniture back to life. It has always been really sturdy and serviceable, but the dings and watermarks of years had taken their toll. Now it really shines! I'm very pleased, and so is Marcia. The dogs are less enamoured of the large hunk of sharp-cornered wood in the middle of their nice roomy family room ... but they get a vote when they contribute to the mortgage payment and not a day sooner. In both the shots, you can get some decent reflection out of the semi-gloss polyurethane, but not so much that it hides the glorious grain in the parquet top.
In other news, I'm terribly glad it's Friday. If I'm on the ball, then I can probably bail out a little early today, and make up for the time I spent working remotely on Tuesday when I shouldn't have been doing so. Have a great day!

0937- Good morning. We've been up and about for a while. This is going to be an organizational weekend for me. I've got a new website that we're donating hosting and services for that I need to start refurbishing. My closet needs a good thrashing, as there's stuff in there I will never, ever wear again. Then there's the computer gear closet. I can happily make half (but no more than half) of that stuff redundant. Then there's some tear-out that needs to be done in the garden, a stack of Linux [Magazine|Journal] and SysAdmin offerings that need reading ... well, you get the picture. I'll be busy. More here as events and time warrant. Ciao!

0924 - Good morning. Well, there was some progress made yesterday by your's truly. The closet clean-up is done, with a stack of rags, some nice-condition donation-worthy shirts, and a bunch of denim (that in all honesty I'm never going to fit into again barring 3 rounds with Cancer) for Marcia's fabric room. Beyond that... well, I did some site refurbishing here and a bit with the newly hosted site, and got all the domain transfer/DNS modification stuff done and out of the way. Then I got started on the computer gear closet a little bit. I'll finish that today, along with the garden stuff. When I run out of steam, then it'll be time for the magazines.
Monday is Talk Like A Pirate Day. So be prepared for plenty of pirate jokes like, "What's yer pirate's favorite Motown singer?" [1] And don't be confusing the word "Pirate" with that of any other occupation, or you might find yourself in the same predicament that I did one year...
"Extend flaps" "Thrust to 89%, right rudder 15 degrees." "Please Fasten Your Seatbelts." ... and my personal favorite: "Who here *doesn't* know how to swim?" Then I'll remember, it's talk like a PIRATE day, not talk like a Pilot day. |
It's good to have a chuckle now and again, but don't forget that we have young men and women dying in the Middle East, in the service of our country.
After a few minutes contemplating the small blessings of a much shorter list of casualties than usual, offset by five families who will forever mourn their loss ... I'm just sad, that's all.
On with life for the living, though. So we must shop, then back into my list of tasks. Have a great Sunday!

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
