1058 - Good morning. The differential between post times here and in the page header is due, of course, to me being in California, and the server configured to display post times in EST5EDT. I skipped yesterday entirely, as my sister and her family came back over to spend another day with Marcia and I here at my folks house. Great fun, if a bit tiring keeping up with a 6 and 9 year old. I must have had that much energy at one time or another, but no more. Saturday's micro-post appeared courtesy of my Treo 600. This morning I've setup my laptop for a few minutes. I'll definitely have a raft of pictures and whatnot once we've returned from our travels. CES in Vegas is over, and MacWorld is opening in SF... where we have to drive through this afternoon. Yikes. I'd better get packed. Remember our troops! Catch you later.

Mon    TUESDAY    Wed    Thu    Fri    Sat    Sun
January 10, 2006

0727 - Good morning. Marcia preempted our room service call (at 0630) by about 5 minutes. It was another 15 minutes or so before we started hearing the rumble of jets taking off. Yeah, we're at the Millbrae Westin, strategically positioned at the head of the SFO runway they use for takeoffs. So you get dual 747 launches, the building shakes a bit. Surprisingly little noise except for the lowest harmonics makes it through the 6" triple-pane windows. At least we have a Bay view (or did last night, today the world is covered in fog). One key indicator that we're in a ridiculous hotel is the bottle of water at the bedside. 23 fluid ounces for $4.50, excluding service fees and taxes. We brought in our own eight-pak of water and a few sodas last night.

Last night was dinner with the Andresens. (Happy 25th anniversary, Jack and Trudy). We went to Casa Lupe, chowed on the wonderful spicy stuff, then headed back to Jack and Trudy's for family picture review and a couple hours of nattering. Much fun.

Marcia's in sales meetings and award dinner all day and well into the evening. I'll be out toodling around the Bay Area, visiting a few people here and there. Tomorrow is likely to be a relaxing "in" day for me, then Thursday I'll go up and take in a museum or two in the City. Okay, I'm going to prep for the day, have a good one yourselves.

January 11, 2006

0905 - Good morning. Today, less fog and more rain. I'll be heading over to Berkeley to do some visiting momentarily, as soon as I'm sure that the MacHeads are all inside their reality distortion coventry. Marcia's first day of sales meetings went well, and she's downstairs for more today. Lucky girl! Grin. Have a great day!

Mon    Tues    Wed    THURSDAY    Fri    Sat    Sun
January 12, 2006

1050 - Good morning. Marcia's downstairs in her last half-day of meetings. I've got our bags packed. I don't know yet whether she's got to go to her office yet or not, though. Later this afternoon we'll head south to visit with Pat and Nathan for a few days. We may also visit second cousin Mary Pope-Handy (and her family?) at some point. I may go back to Fry's for a second round of window shopping (as I really don't want to carry much back, but Fry's is a much better place than Best Buy or Circuit City for the sorts of things I look for. I did note that at the Fry's in Newark, on the shelf next to Windows were a variety of Linux distributions. Most prominently featured was SuSE 10. Xandros was there, and Linspire. Also FreeBSD. On the office side of things, I found the retail box version of OpenOffice there next to Office 2003, but no such luck for Sun's StarOffice. Either it was sold out, or Sun couldn't cut a deal with Fry's (more likely - Fry's bargains pretty hard for margin).

My biggest concession to leisure time is reading. I've knocked back Anne Rice's Servant of the Bones, some recent William Gibson, and a couple of other Sci-Fi nibbles, too. Right now I'm in the midst of a Clarke/Baxter collaboration, then more William Gibson in queue. I'll return to that now, and let you get on with your day. Have a lovely!

Mon    Tues    Wed    Thu    FRIDAY    Sat    Sun
January 13, 2006

1717 - Good evening (California time). Marcia and I partook of a gift massage each this morning, at the hands of this talented woman. If you're in (or going to be visiting) the South Bay Area, this is a good way to spend a little time and coin, letting Sheri help you relax a bit. The balance of the day was spent reading and relaxing. Marcia and Pat are shopping now, then we're going out for chinese. Happy Friday!

1905 - Good evening. Relaxing day today, travel day tomorrow. We hit the farmer's market this morning, visited with second cousin Mary Pope-Handy and family for a while this afternoon, and now we're watching Patriots v. Broncos and making supper here at Pat and Nathan's. A bit of packing, a bit of dessert will finish out this evening, then we're up at 0630 tomorrow morning to get up and out to the airport. Happy weekend, folks!

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
