0643 - Good morning. I lied yesterday. The afternoon was nice enough, and the ibuprofen worked well enough, that I was able to complete the mulching (and a little weeding) in the front beds yesterday afternoon, in about 1.5 hours. And blessed joy, I'm moving about without too much difficulty this morning. Of course, after a relatively gray and grim weekend, it would (and is) glorious and sunny today. Not much else to report: Dinner was pork loin stir fry, including onion, red bell pepper and carrots with Hoisin sauce over rice. Listening to Steve Vai and Robbie Robertson discs, reading Usenix Login, playing Doom3. Marcia spent much of the weekend sewing and working in her quilting online groups.
Oh, yeah. According to CNN (a Time-Warner property, yes?), Time is reporting that global warming is real. DoD is reporting that the situation regarding peak oil is a bit more serious than previously thought. Perhaps the ones that go first, in the coming avian flu pandemic, will really be the lucky ones. Of course, a modern-day black death will cut energy usage dramatically, which will cut emissions dramatically. Enough? Hmmm.
Time to get to work. Happy Monday!

0812 - Good morning. Only one major annoyance this morning, aside from the usual traffic congestion. A few months back a kid took his dad's gun to daycare and was playing with it inside his backpack. Firing the gun, he wounded a little girl in the arm. The little girl's dad was understandably upset, but didn't blame the daycare center. Well, a lawyer got to him. Now he blames the daycare center, and anyone else he can find within a seven block radius. I'm surprised, really, that the snake didn't convince him to sue the parents of all the other children there, on the premise that their children should have known and protected his daughter. Grrrr. Lawyers.
Okay, someone's turning on lights in my side of the building, I'd best continue with work. Have a great day!
1356 - Argh... I wrote that little bit, then failed to publish (using rsync over ssh, easy as pie, but still to difficult for Mr. Thicky Thickman this morning, apparently). I found an interesting network conundrum, and while no solution is in sight, at least I found out how to identify the particular issue and test for it. Now back to the grind. Ciao!

0627 - Good morning. Lucky me. I'm headed to the dentist this morning, this time just for my regular cleaning. After last year, when it seemed that I spent more time with the dentist than at work or home, this has been a pleasant hiatus.
Things I've been reading: Islam Is At War With Us from Eric Raymond. Fred on Everything, just about all the time. Linux Gazette: Either the current issue, or random spelunking through back issues. Always a good time, there.
Someone asked me what I watch on TV these days. Not too much is the truest answer there is. That the number isn't zero is a testament to not being a Motie. With just one more hand I could effectively hold a plate, eat, and read, simultaneously. My alternative is to watch something like Food Network while eating, a very self-reinforcing behaviour. So I do that for 15 or 20 minutes most evenings, whatever's on when supper is. We watched the DVD of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire the other day, picking that one up retail at our warehouse store rather than waiting for Netflix to get around to us heavy queue users with a badly scratched copy. I'll pick up something from all of our BBC stuff on disc, or perhaps some Python, sometimes. But mostly it's music, books and the machine. The other night we did fire up the PS/2 and play Jeopardy for a while, though.
So, after the dentist, I've got a server to emplace, and start testing. Beyond that, there's plenty to do. I'd best be on my way, have a great day.

0620 - Good morning. There was a Slashdot blurb on the Theatre vs. MPAA tug-of-war over DVD release delays. There was linkage to this article: Movie theater execs fight shrinking DVD window (I've no idea how long that link will be good for). I have some thoughts on the matter.
Let me be up front about a couple of things: I'm not about artsy movies. I'm not about message movies, unless the message can be ignored enough to enjoy the film anyway. So, why am I not in theaters much? Well, for one, the MPAA treats their customers like thieves. For two, the member studios of the MPAA are purveyors of mostly crap. High budget crap. Mostly unwatchable high budget crap. Theatres are full of rude people, ringing cell phones, sticky floors and high-priced snacks. Where else can you go to get 30 cents worth of popcorn for 10 bucks? Let me see what's showing at one local "movieplex"...
Inside Man, with Denzel Washington. He's a talented guy who's been done to death. I no more enjoy watching Denzel anymore than I do Helen Hunt - they're fine people, but they don't disappear into their roles. Besides, Denzel as a cop, dealing with a hostage situation? Puh-lease! Stay Alive: Hmm. AD&D comes alive. Yeah ... right. Been done, several times. She's the Man. What were they thinking when they titled this? Why not just stage Twelfth Night again and be done with it? Better yet, just film a Oregon Shakespeare production and show that. The original is fine, needing no modernization. V for Vendetta - that one's a maybe. After all, when is a terrorist a freedom fighter? And Agent Elrond gets to spend a whole movie behind a static mask. Good enough to put on the Netflix queue when it's out? Sure. Good enough to brave the hordes? Why? Failure to Launch: Isn't that just V for Viagra? No? Okay, how about I don't like looking at Sarah Jessica Parker, she's not to my taste. I'm sure that Ferris is very happy with her, though. The Hills Have Eyes. Okay. A mutant atomic zombie movie. If there were still drive-ins, I'd be there. But again, not in the theaters.
The Shaggy Dog has Tim Allen going for it. But he's been glitzed, and I'm bored now. 16 Blocks is a Gauntlet remake with the man who was fired at an asteroid. I say, keep firing him at asteroids until one of them goes away. Tyler Perry's Madea's Family Reunion is ... I have no fucking clue. The description makes it sound like one of those interminable movies that wants to be everything Steel Magnolias was, but never can be.
So, in summary: crap, crap, crap, Netflix, crap, Drive-In, crap, crap, crap. And the theaters and the MPAA wonder why revenue goes down. I don't.
At least, yay, it's Friday! The dentist trip went fine yesterday, just a cleaning and a gum health profile (showing marked progress from when I started with this dentist, and more frequent cleanings). I also stopped by the oral surgeon's office (to show off all the implants), but they were off yesterday, I guess.
I've got some end-of-quarter tasks to assist in, and a phone system networking change I'd like to get executed, so I'd best be on my way. Have a great day!

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia.
