0704 - Good morning. First off, a big shout of thanks to our friend Linda Rose for sharing her friends and family with us for an Easter Sunday brunch. We had a fun, filling time. The latter was primarily due to there being enough food for 40, but only eight of us (unless you count distinct personalities).

Terra Red Bliss - these potato chips rock. I'm usually not about raving over commercial products, but these are awesome! The flavor combo is "olive oil, roasted garlic, and parmesan". I often don't much like chips that aren't either just plain chips, or are faux-nacho colored and flavored. But every once in a while, some package catches my eye. I'll buy them, try three, turn funny colors, and pitch the bag at the trash, vowing never again. But these are really good chips. If you like the flavors, you'll probably like these. No, I don't get a red dime or even free chips, I just like'm.

Tree branches at sunset, backyard Tree branches at sunset, front yard Molly, excited and bouncing Tulips from the top Two-color tulip from the side

Sunsets, dogs, and flowers. Not the most exciting subjects in the world, but we love them. I like the sunset shots for desktop wallpaper, and the flowers too, sometimes. The sunset shots were from Wednesday last, as one storm line rolled out, and another was preparing to roll in. Back inside, Molly was sure it was time for a treat, and started bouncing on her front paws. I finally managed to catch her with front feet in the air. She's such a happy dog.

The tulip shots are from Sunday. We're already losing the petals, and may get another week or two out of the whole season, so I wanted to pick up a few more snaps to get us through the year until those come up again next spring. These bulbs are glorious large flowers, and they're supposed to be happy from year to year, in the ground. We'll see. If you'd like the full-size image of that glorious red/yellow tulip, 2304x1728 pixels and weighing in at 472KB, here's tulip_red_yellow.jpg. Enjoy!

A bit of light rain last night seems to have continued off and on - it's still a bit damp out. But it is supposed to clear out and warm up for most of the week. I ought to look and see how much vacation time I have in the "bank". Also on tap for this week, I have a plan for that old Sony laptop that I don't use (and won't carry anymore because it's so bloody heavy). There's an OpenBSD developer in need, so I'll clean it up and send it up to the Hackathon with Jason in May. But I'd best get my part done before we get down to the wire - procrastination sucks. Now on into the commute. Have a great Monday!

1537 - Gaaaaah! I mean, good afternoon. Life is getting away from me. Well, not life, just time. I've been a busy beaver and have little to publically show for it. Rebuilding internal servers consumes most of my work-related day, and there's either nothing interesting, or nothing I should say about our specific configurations. So there! But yeah, I can say that when I can, I use OpenBSD. When OpenBSD falls over during install due to lack of vendor support for the hardware RAID cards, then I fall back on Debian. It's the hardware I have, and it is what I'll use as long as it's useful. Now back to work with me. See you tomorrow.

1452 - Good afternoon. "I hear the voices ... I am the decider." That's my President, boy-howdy!

Meantime, I'm building a router on the bones of an old Dell 600SC system, after adding in a couple of PCI-X gigabit ethernet cards. One dollop of Debian Stable later, and I'll have a router that can double as a DHCP server, an NTP server, and a Partrige in a Pear Tree. I think. We're not done adding services to that beast, I'm sure. But right now it's time to inflict Crystal Reports on someone. So goes the rest of this lovely afternoon ... at least it's lovely outside. But I'm not outside, I'm in here. During the days of the weekend, and possibly for the Monday that I may take off of work, it's supposed to rain. Foo! Have a great rest of your day.

April 21, 2006

2025 - Good evening. Whew! Happy Friday! We slept badly, worked hard, and the week is done. There's still plenty I'm fed up with, though. A President who can't be bothered to spend time with a woman who's son died in Iraq, but he can apologize to a Chinese President when a protester is heard. Hey, W! Protest is still legal here, neh? Oh, and to the Greenies who not only oppose "polluting" power generation but now are going over the line and opposing renewable (wind farm) projects - bite me! My newest old idea? Burn Greenies for fuel. Now I'm going to go relax and watch some Monty Python with Marcia.

2104 - Argh! What happened to the day? I took care of some chores, Marcia and I went to Sears for a couple of things, then I worked on the TV stand down in the woodshop all through the afternoon. This evening I cooked for Marcia, Linda Rose and myself, then we watched a Poirot mystery. Nice day, got past me again. Ciao!

Carcass of the new TV StandStaining the top of the new TV Stand1547 - Good afternoon. I've continued to stay busy on the Television/Stereo Gear stand that I'm building down in the woodshop. At left you can see the carcass of the stand. The next step there is to build the face frame and attach it. Then I'll size the back and start finishing that (easier by far to finish then apply the back). In the right picture, you can see the top of the stand, which I'm also fabricating and finishing separately. The top has a breadboard edge, attached with biscuits in the slots I cut using the DeWalt Plate Joiner that Marcia got me for my birthday. The stain is a dark walnut, that should deepen considerably after I've applied a couple of coats of Danish oil over the top. I'm thinking that'll be a nicer finish than the polyurethane, in this case. If I change my mind, then I can always put poly over the Danish oil.

Devoutly reading his bible... Goose greeters at my office Another avid beltway reader

Treo camera shots aren't as good as those from the Kodak DX6490, but the camera phone has the advantage of convenience, simple one-hand (and low attention) operating characteristics, and reasonable resolution. Above I've captured for posterity two people who simply must make sure no time is wasted ... by reading while on their Washington Beltway commute. No, not at a standstill. In motion. Bastards. In the middle shot, I was greated at my office early one morning by geese patrolling the planter beds very near to the front entrance doors.

Another week gone by, another group of soldiers lost to the Middle East meat grinder. I remain proud of, and thankful to our men and women in uniform, executing policy out at the sharp end of the stick...

Instead of continuing in the woodshop, I'll get out and mow the front yard and back. It's up at about 6 inches with the rains. If I don't today, then it'll be next week and a bloody jungle by then. Ciao!

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
