0936 - Good morning. I use ClamAV on a number of machines. ClamAV is Open Source Antivirus software, easy to link into mail servers, a bit more challenging on the filesystem and Windows level. But it catches and blocks a lot of phishing stuff that no one else seems to. A new version is out, as of yesterday. So I've updated and restarted ClamAV as appropriate, and the logfiles after restart look fine.
Fast patching and code transparency are a strength of Open Source software, but the downside is that either you or your distribution team (say, Red Hat, Debian, or Novell) are responsible for keeping on top of the changes. In the case of ClamAV, because I don't use the distro packaged version, I am subscribed to the Announce mailing list, so that I get email when interesting things are going on with this key piece of software. Then I leave that in my inbox as a reminder until I've gotten to all the systems that need updating.
Happy May Day. Oh, and if you celebrate "I'm here illegally and I want to demonstrate Day", then good luck with that, eh? Now, back to work with me.

0955 - Good morning. The mention of ClamAV yesterday brought an infrequent correspondent in from the cold, however briefly.
Hey, Brian. It's been a while since I wrote, but I had something to contribute today. Check out http://www.sanesecurity.com/clamav/ where Steve Basford keeps an optional .ndb library updated... it's quite succesful and has seen low to non-existent false positives. Highly recommended for mail servers. A. Nony Mouse |
On the face of it, looks good. I'll do a bit more research and test it out. More when I know more.
May Day ++ ... and the net impact of A Day Without Immigrants? Not much from this vantage point. But as I said before, I've got no problem with immigrants. I have a problem with illegal aliens. Why people (and the media, which I don't put in the same category as people, since they're so clearly not...) can't seem to differentiate between the two is beyond me. Jerry certainly seemed to enjoy the lessened traffic that the rally brought to Los Angeles.
Grrrrr! Florida professor sentenced in terrorism case. Yeah, this gets under my skin. Why in Chthulhu's Name are we taxpayers supposed to foot the bill to keep this waste of skin in our prisons for another 18 months before deporting him? Is it inane laws? Is it the Prison Guards lobbying efforts that make this sort of thing make sense? Take him out, now, past the 200 mile limit and drop him off the boat with some chum. Case closed.
Deep breaths. Okay, on with the working day. Ciao!

0750 - Good morning-ish. Lucy woke me just before the alarm clock went off at 0530, as she prepared to vomit reville for us. I got her into the bathroom in time to make it an easy cleanup. Then I let both dogs out into the back yard while I executed that cleanup. So I'm starting the day pretty tired, since I had a bit of a go-round last night via email. Somebody is handing out advice that I strongly disagree with, and they kept getting shriller and ruder as the exchange went on. The funny thing is that the other party has a history of being a fuckwad via email, because he's bloody smart, young, (both true) and headstrong (my opinion). But since I'm not paid anything for countering this bad advice, I'm going to do my best to let go. If the alternate path is followed, I'll not have any role in supporting it, so I can just say "I told you so" later. But it's irksome to have to go through those battles, and keeps me from sleeping well. I'd best be about my work ... have a great day.

1620 - Good afternoon. We got up, Marcia went to the club to work out. When she got back, we went down to Patuxent Nursery, to pick up as much of our spring plantings as possible. That we did. But first, Marcia's strawberries are just spectacular this year. We're going to feast!
At the nursery, we picked up three flats of annuals: two Begonia varieties and one of orange Marigolds. We also picked up 8 small herbs, 8 tomatoes, 4 cucumber, 2 broccoli, and 4 peppers. I still need more tomatoes and peppers (they didn't have any Roma or Jalapeno at the moment). So I've planted all that stuff...
The TV Stand project is calling me now, so I'd best go do something on that before I fall over. Later...

1742 - Good evening. I'm sunburnt, whacked, and ready for a nice, relaxing work week. Last night I nearly finished up the TV Stand. It's upstairs now, awaiting the right day to unload the old furniture, and move stuff around. It's also waiting for me to fabricate the turntable slide. I've got that picture in my head now, so it just needs an evening of assembly, and a couple of evenings of finishing work. Then I can screw it into the stand.
Today we picked up a few more vegetables, four Roma tomato and two mystery squash. I got those planted after the shopping. Then I got the watering systems setup both for the main garden boxes, and for the strawberry patch boxes. The latter was a bit of work because part of the exposed piping was whacked off below ground level by the lawn folks last fall. It didn't cost much, I just had to replace an elbow. But finding the bloody thing was a bit of digging, since I couldn't remember where it had been precisely. So that's all done.
Part of my mind and heart today was, as usual, with our troops in the field. You folks are awesome! I read this THE BOTTOM LINE - OBSERVATIONS FROM IRAQI FREEDOM, APRIL 2006, by Barry McCaffrey (General, Ret), on Pournelle's site. It's wonderful to hear such good things about our troops. There's too much screwed up reportage from the Mainstream Media. Still, we have losses...
I salute you!
Now to jump in the shower, Linda Rose is over for supper, and to review Paducah fabrics with Marcia. Oh, the excitement! See you next week.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
