1849 - Good evening. Yesterday was toast. I didn't stop working on stuff from 0630 (driving to work) to 2230, when the backup finally finished. No excuses, just no time. I'm building a production RHEL Xen box, working on some Solaris goo, and assorted other tasks at work. Here, I've got school, remodelling, furniture ideas, and much more. Life is. I guess I'll do some school stuff, then some remodelling stuff. Ciao!

An expanding clamp |
Left side detail |
2124 - Good evening. Marcia's watching Project Runway, and I'm doing some school work. I fabricated the first of the shelves this evening, and test fitted it into the area occupied by the blue medicine ball, in the image at left. Why, you ask? Because I was gluing two thin sheets of Lua plywood to be the sides of the shelving area, filling the right side between the wall and the vanity. They're thin, so they warp a bit. What I needed was a way to clamp them firmly across most of their surfaces. Possible but hard with the vanity side, more difficult on the wall side. I'd tacked them top and bottom with the nailer, but that's not enough. So I had my bright idea - deflate Marcia's exercise ball, and reinflate it sufficiently in place to "clamp" both pieces. Worked like a charm, too.
At right, you can see the results of the filler piece and trim that I fabricated and stained. Yeah, in bright light, what I did came out a bit darker, and much grainier than the cherry of the commercial face frame on the vanity. I'm okay with that, though. I'm close.
Not much else to report. I still need to fabricate support pieces for the second shelf, and of course the second shelf itself. Then a bit of sanding and another three-day cycle of staining and oiling. I won't be tiling the counter until the weekend of the 9th, at the earliest. That means that I probably won't be done until the 17th. I guess the dining room remodel doesn't begin until March.

2048 - Good evening. Today, I worked on computers. Tonight, it's schoolwork, not woodworking. I see that I have a considerable challenge before me, too. The book has some interesting factual errors in it. It also appears that my considerable knowledge in networking may not count for as much as I thought, since some "correct" answers in class are apparently in direct contradiction to actual practices and my experience in the field. Well, I'll do the best I can. I'm going to have to search for harder, but fairer, classes, in the future. Yeah, I know this is only week two, but trust me, I can tell...

Some plumbing |
1733 - Good afternoon. As the vanity project inches forward, I remembered that I needed to get the bits of plumbing that are going to be buried out of the way. They're not really buried, but where those pipes protruded into the old cabinet, they're now out to the left. I cut an access hole big enough to work in, in the side of the cabinet. But who wants to do that unless necessary. I still have to pressure-test the connections, but they're pretty much buttoned up now. When I finish the shelving unit, and the counter is on, that'll be a lot less accessible.
I finished fabricating the brackets for the second shelf. I sanded those out, along with the first shelf, and got the primary coat of stain on all that. Once those have been oiled and dried, I can emplace those bits, and create the last shelf, the trim, and the backer board for the unit. Those will take three days to finish, so I'm on track now to do tiling next weekend. Huzzah!
Russ called with tickets to hockey, but I had to decline - I'm taking my lovely Marcia out to supper, a much more important joy in my life.

First shelf in place |
1709 - Good evening. I hear there's a football game on today. But it's not the last one of the season, there's something called a "Pro Bowl" on in a couple of weeks. I guess I may watch this one, since Tom's in it (again).
After shopping, I installed the first shelf and assorted trim components. Then I fabricated the second shelf, the rest of the trim components, and the backing board. By my count, there are seventeen individual pieces of wood that make up this little side-shelf. Four can't be seen. Two shelves. Two sides and a back. Two visible shelf supports. Six trim pieces that make everything look neater than it really is. Yep, seventeen. Late tonight, I'll steel-wool the stained pieces from today's work, then apply Danish Oil to all of them. A couple of days for that to dry completely, then I can install the balance of the shelving components on Tuesday night. Oh, and I wall-mounted the other cabinet today, too.
I like staying busy.
My hat's off to our serving troops - I hope some of y'all have a chance to shout and hollar over the game today. You folks out at the pointy end are the greatest! My condolences for your losses ...

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
