2134 - Good evening. Monday night was usually (as opposed to "unusually") busy. Last night I caught up on most of my schoolwork. Tonight I've been mucking about with my iPod Touch and jailbreaking. SSH on the iPod - fun. That and I've got to start going through the pictures from Faye's wedding. Marcia wants some of the images tweaked a bit - GIMP is a great tool for that. Back to the millstone.

2125 - Good evening. We enjoy some stuff from our Netflix subscription more than others. We just watched the "new" Casino Royale Bond flick - I liked it, and it was better than Marcia had feared. But no, Craig is no Connery. We've also been enjoying the assorted Michael Palin travelogue shows recently.
I just got a survey request from KFOG, my favorite radio station. It sucke that I'm out of range (by about a continent), and that in general the Listen online trick doesn't work for me under Linux. Once in a while mplayer manages to successfully latch onto the stream, but mostly it fails and dies. Too bad because I love their programming, and the DJs are awesome (especially Dave Morey!). Unusually for me, I did the survey thing, and had a chance for an essay portion, not a frequent thing to find in online surveys:
We moved from California 5.5 years ago. KFOG is STILL my favorite radio station. I run Linux and can't easily listen online. I'm out of range of FM except when we're visiting. I love the music, the mix, Dave Morey ROCKS! Local radio station here, 94.7 The Globe is picking up some KFOG vibe, it seems, but it's a pale shadow of the real thing. I don't do much for your demographics, but I count on y'all being there, when I'm there. I'd be pleased if you kept up the good work! This feedback goes in my post for today, because KFOG rocks!
Now, to start doing something about those pictures. Ciao!

0948 - Good morning. I'm keeping an eye on email should a weekend implementation test need my assistance at work. But the big deal is that I'm starting the dining room project today. If I'm lucky, I'll have all the wallpaper off before the end of the weekend. We'll see...

Dining Room - the Before look |
1326 - Good afternoon. At right you can see how the dining room walls looked before I got started stripping wallpaper. It's certainly not awful, but it's not really to our taste. The paper was starting to peel back on it's own, the brown on the upper walls is drab rather than warm, the carpet needs replacing, and I don't even want to talk about that light fixture.
Of course, getting started was more involved than was strictly necessary. I went to Home Depot primarily for wallpaper stripping supplies. But I also wanted to check the sump pump section. Ours was a diaphragm-switched unit - generally more reliable than floats, but even though I had the whole unit out and cleaned up within the last year, the switch was — I think — still mucked up a bit with the clay that permeates our "soil". It's never come close to flooding us, but it definitely had problems shutting off appropriately. One day it was going to burn out, and I'd be really unhappy when I discovered that.
So I found a new-in-box Ridgid pump, with an electronic switch. Nothing to gum up there. So after I got home, I replaced the sump pump: a fresh run of 1-1/2" PVC pipe, a check valve, and adapt all that to 1-1/2" threaded galvinized pipe into the pump housing. Connected, tested, and closed up. Yay. Then I cleaned up the workshop, which I'd never gotten around to, following the vanity project. Then I could start stripping the wallpaper... almost. I had to finish clearing out the room, remove all the wall and switch plates, take down the window finishes. It was 1530 before I actually started on taking off wallpaper. So I only finished one of four walls before stopping for the day. It's pretty robustly on there. Today I'm backing off, I'll do school work instead, so next weekend, perhaps.
Our troops in the field, in the Middle East, around the world, or at home training — all do us honor by their service and their sacrifice. We've lost eight of these fine folks in the last two weeks. While it's better than a couple of years ago, when two weeks would count 80 lives spent in service, there's still 8 families missing a loved one. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.
