2044 - Good evening. Craig Zacker is the "author" of Network+ Certification, a textbook I'm using for my current course at UMUC. He notes about Linux: "Originally developed as a school project by a Swedish student named Linus Torvalds,...." Sigh. That's one of the lesser flaws in this book. But to get such an easily confirmed piece of information wrong — one has to wonder how much else he fubar'd that I haven't caught. Chores, chores, and schoolwork. Ciao!

2200 - Good evening. Rest in Peace, Arthur Clarke. As one article noted, he was the last of the "Big Three" in Science Fiction, Asimov and Heinlein having been called to Valhalla about 20 years or so ago. Between the three of them, and Frank Herbert, they did much to cement my pleasure in reading, and in speculating about the future of Humanity in the Universe. It's been said that mostly Science Fiction is a very positive-thinking sort of field, as we (as a race) have to have survived long enough to get there. Given that the Golden Age stretched from the Great Depression through the worst parts of the Cold War, one could excuse the desire to find a better path. I perhaps favored Asimov for his characters, Heinlein for his exuberance, and Clarke for his precision and wonder. Herbert made me think. Well, they all made me think, and read, and think some more. Good habits to have.
Anyway, time to retire. Or at least, to sleep. Ciao!

1733 - Good evening. Spring starts tomorrow. Good thing, because it's raining buckets here, with thunder and lightning expected later. More in a bit...
0939 - Howdy. Nothing really new. I had a good laugh this evening - it's just so funny watching pompous little twits melt down. Yeah, sometimes that's me, too. But not this time. I've been promised that I'm in a killfile now. One can but hope. On the school front, it's "Spring Break" - our weeks run Wednesday through the following Tuesday. So there's no reading or assignments this week, but plenty to do to keep the Study Group projects rolling. Now, to relax for a bit...

1847 - Hmmm. No reason, really, I've just been busy. The dining room is fully sanded and respackled where needed. School group project work has eaten the evenings of late. The weekly shopping is done, since key stores are closed tomorrow. The taxes are done. (And we got bit by AMT this year. Bastards.) Work is work, and Spring is sprung, around here. Chilly, breezy, but definitely spring. Nothing else really to report. Oh, yeah. No Peeps, ever. Ciao!

1445 - Good afternoon. I could have, perhaps should have, gone and done some work in the yard today. But I didn't. I did get the humidifier cleaned and re-filtered, put in a couple of new floor vent covers to replace crappy old rusting ones, and reorganized several boxes worth of paperwork. I'm about to get ambitious and clean up my desk some. But time keeps flying by, so I wanted to stop in and take care of business...
Five soldiers were reported this week to have sacrificed their lives in our service. These men, and all our service men and women around the world do us honor as they perform their duty, in hard and dangerous places. My condolences to the families and units of the fallen.ffffff

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
