1841 - Good evening. I don't know why I even bother with Mondays. They're always a blowout. Ah, yeah, if there weren't a Monday, then Tuesday would really suck. The good news is that all the electioneering will be about over by this time next week. If you have an incumbent you can vote against, do so. Anyone new is a smidgeon less likely to be in someone else's pocket already. Yeah, that includes the bloke from San Diego who ain't me.

Tonight, schoolwork. Not much else going on. Ciao!

1942 - Good evening. Pizza's on the way, I signed up for Twitter, and I have more school work to do. But I wanted to show you the Frankendiskchassis that I fabricated out of woodshop scrapage. I had a Coolmax drive chassis that handles many things: IEEE1394, USB, and eSATA. But it's really designed to take one drive in, and use it. But what I want is something I can slot in and out easily, so that I can do the Time Machine dance, then maybe get in a bit of World of Warcraft (which is installed on a different external hard drive), etc, etc. I've been using this chassis with Harmony the MacBook Pro, while the Antec MX-1 (which doesn't grok IEEE1394) plays house with Slartibartfast, the Ubuntu workstation/server.

So I dismantled all the bits and started cutting and assembling wood scraps around them. It was not pre-designed, except in functional intention. I made cuts, then figured out what the next step would be. Sometimes I made wrong cuts, then realized I could use them for a previously unintended purpose — witness the LEDs, their wiring is slotted through a cross cut that otherwise might have merited starting from scratch. Anyway, the thing works like a champ, I'm very happy, and I like how it looks. Now, on to the school work. Ciao!

2218 - Good evening. I've finished and submitted my midterm project for the CMIT368 course that I'm taking this semester. I think the expectation was for about 2 or three pages summarizing the steps for three common Windows Junior Admin tasks. I wrote the eight page Phase I training manual, including four screenshots, alternatives, and best practices. Well, "pretty good practices", since I didn't recommend installing Linux once in the project. I got that out of my system at the beginning of class in the online forums. To be pedantic and repetative would be boring and possibly grade-deflating.

Oh, yeah. Twitter. You can find me there, now. I didn't want my preferred 'nick to get squittered (squattered?), so I signed up. Plenty of folks I know there, too. Sigh. Another time sink, huzzah! And it's already led me to John Cleese's blog. Sigh. Who needs sleep, anyway?

1836 - Good evening. I don't know what happened to last night. I must have been doing something useful, but beyond reading the end of Mort, and starting Pyramids, and screwing around with Twitter, clients, and secure configuration thereof, the evening is a blank. Lessee ... leftover pizza for dinner. No rings at the door (as planned, yay, so the dogs remained relatively calm, only barking at kids shouting in the street a few times). I guess that was about it.

Today we took the picture of my maternal grandfather's grocery business to Michael's, along with a 50% off coupon, to get it framed. It's been rolled up safely in a cardboard tube, a copy of the original, since my grandmother passed away a few years ago. A confluence of events brought both coupon and photo to my attention this week. That's a good thing, otherwise it'd have been another few years, no doubt.

We've also been looking at more Art. As the rooms in the house get refinished the way we want, we don't really have much to put on the walls. We've been accumulating small pieces here and there, and buying the occasional framed print from Allposters.com (recommended - their online systems work, and they do what they say, when they say they'll do it). But while that's fairly economical, I really don't want an entire house full of prints. We have one more on the way now, and we were going to go to some of the more frugally-oriented galleries in Annapolis soon, but...

On the way home, we stopped into Fabian House to see what they had on hand. We walked out with five pieces: a framed landscape in oil for the living room, another (gallery mounted) for my office, a piece of metalwork that we'll put in the bedroom, and a couple of smaller pieces for ... someplace. All that for just over $200 - well less than one of the paintings in the gallery we were going to visit. Fabian house is fun, you'll like the folks that run the place, too. - you should drop in there. Just don't ask for steak, as the restaurant is all vegetarian. Grin.

Home just after 11, I started tearing down the rest of the yard, in prep for winter. It was a good day for the work, dry and high 60's. All of the annuals are out; the decorative grasses stay in and get trimmed in February or early March. The hanging baskets are out. Lawns/leaves are mowed. The hastas are cut down. What remains is the final decommissioning of the watering systems for winter. That involves dragging the compressor around and blowing water out of everything, bringing in most of the hoses, etc. Next weekend for that, along with final dismantling of the herb garden (mostly dead now after first freeze a couple weeks ago). Now: dinner, and some schoolwork. Ciao!

2103 - Good evening. Read this XKCD strip and laugh, please. Shopping this morning, DIY work for Linda this afternoon, chicken/veg stir fry and Bab5 this evening. Not a bad day, hereabouts. And two more days until one kind of insanity ends, and probably another kind begins Jan 21. But there's always the interim Bush/Cheney end of term stuff to deal with. That should be interesting (and not in a good way). Dammit. Why did Ron Paul drop out? Dammit.

Our armed forces continue to inspire pride and honor. Their professionalism and commitment to duty are worthy of our respect. Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
