2028 - Congrats to Felicia and the rest of The Guild folks - they've apparently just gotten a reorder: a 12-episode Season 3. Good on her, and all of them. Sorry, I just can't fit any more links into that first sentence. But, do watch The Guild. It's fun, witty, and (from this part-time gamer's perspective) a special weird mix of "No way!" and "Yeah, that's how it is." Back to the Monday evening chores, now. Ciao!

2243 - Well, there's a program to be written for my final class project, as previously mentioned. As usual, describing what I wrote, I bit off much more than the required chewy amount. So, instead of just stock STDIN processing using cin and a short list of numeric inputs, I'm doing a bit of text statistics generation, more than the wc utility does. And I want it to work with STDIN or with file input, so I've got to do commandline argument processing. That function alone (which was the largest part of what I worked this evening) satisfies most of the requirements for the final project. Also I'm trying only to use those language features that we've been introduced to, so I'm using stacked if statements instead of switch. Enough for today. Ciao!

2142 - I was busy until late, last night, working on my final project for class. After taking out the comments and blank lines, it's 166 lines of code, five functions. I process command line arguments, loop through text input from either a file or STDIN, and generate some simple statistics about the input. It's a bit over the top relative to what was required for this course, but I wanted to do something that would challenge me a bit. It isn't "due" until Sunday, but I'm done and it's submitted. I've got some more studying to do, prior to Saturday's final. Then I'm finished with this course.
The weather's been odd. While Santa Barbara burns (gosh, I'm sorry to hear about that), we've got enough rain to put the whole freaking state out, if we could only get the moisture there. It's just a week into May, and we've got over 4 inches of rain here already. Two nights ago, the meter stood at 1.66, which is pretty good. Now we're a bit over the top. Semi-aquatic creatures cry out, saying, "Enough, already!" Me, I'm just damp. And all I can do is watch the grass grow too tall, again. It's too wet to mow. The forecast is for scattered thundershowers the next two days, then a few days clear. One can but hope. Anyway, it's almost Friday. Ciao!

1626 - Final project done, studying done, final done. I guess that I'm done. To "celebrate", I worked on deck maintenance for the last six hours. Time to relax. Ciao!

2132 - I probably should have been planting this weekend. Instead, after yesterday's work on deck maintenance, I gave the house a bath today. Yep, pressure-washed the entire place, top to bottom. Took about 6 hours, including the deck. Whew. I am deeply whacked. So I wound down for 15 minutes or so, took a shower, grilled a dozen chicken breasts (Marcia's main meals for the week). After supper, I did some configuration and setup for Bob on the server, for a new site he's bringing online shortly, and I just finished formatting and posting Jerry's column. Whew.
A note, Sergeant Vile was initially reported DUSTWUN, and was later found to have perished in the same action that claimed the lives of Sergeant Pirtle and Specialist King. Our condolences to the families and the units of all the fallen warriors here reported.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
