0645 - Good morning. I figured I'd get out in front of the ball this week. It's probably just a recipe for getting run over, but worth a try all the same. Today's training session at the LISA '09 conference is going to be provided by James Mauro, speaking on Solaris 10 Performance, Observability, and Debugging. My friend Charlie, a Solaris ninja of the first water, and principal of the Legnem Group, tells me that Mauro is like a firehose when it comes dispensing information. So I pulled out the training material last night and gave it the once over, in hopes of not being overwhelmed. Whew, going over all 400 slides in the printed version was mighty impressive. Caffeine appears to be strongly indicated. Looks like it's going to be really interesting. But the first food they serve isn't until the morning break. So I've had some cheese, a banana, a cup of joe (Kenyan, thanks to Sweet Maria's) and I'm nearly ready to rock and roll. Ciao!

0647 - My brain is about to explode. Lots of data pumping in at a high rate from really smart people. One more full day with Peter Baer Galvin on Solaris stands before me. I'd better start getting a good run-up... Ciao!

2207 - My time at LISA '09 is done. My head didn't explode, barely. I enjoyed and learned from every one of my training sessions. The UMUC school-work starts back up tomorrow. But I'm still unwinding. My thanks to the Usenix staff that put the event on, and the folks who gave the training sessions that taught me so much: Æleen Frisch, Jim Mauro, Peter Baer Galvin, and Marc Staveley. I'm going to be putting all of that to good use. Now, to rest... Ciao!

2126 - Howdy. I've got my next "paper" (really, a letter to a bureacrat) written and submitted to the class for peer editing. Last time, the person who was supposed to peer edit my work didn't. What the instructor called that was "peer editing didn't work for you". No, that's an episode of someone else not doing their work. I am hoping to get useful feedback out of this one, we'll see how it goes. Hey, the garage door just fired off. I'm thinking ice cream is here. Ciao!

1734 - Progress is. I got a bunch of dead stuff cleared from the front beds, and mowed lawns front and back. The latter was more to mulch leaves down into the lawn (at least in front). In back, it was leaves and 8" grass I was facing. No more. I also got some school work done, peer editing an assignment for a classmate. I've made an italian sausage red sauce w/pasta for supper (red sauce from summer tomatoes), and Marcia's assembling the salad as I write. A bit later we'll take SiL Nancy, who's been visiting for the last couple of days, off to the airport. Time to eat, ciao!

1957 - A bit of shopping, some school work, a quick trip to the office in service of being on-call, a couple of hours playing Dragon Age: Origins ... there went my day.
The attack by a treasonous commissioned officer at Fort Hood this week may overshadow any news from across the ocean, but our young men and women are still dying over there in pursuit of our policy goals. And we lost an Amy this week, too. It's undoubtedly old-fashioned of me to think that when it comes to war, it's a job for men. If we were on home soil defending our homes, it's all hands on deck. And women are certainly capable fighters. But it still gets to me more when a female in uniform is lost. I mean no disrespect or lessening of regard for the men who serve our country, either. Our condolences to all of the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
