MONDAY    Tues    Wed    Thu    Fri    Sat    Sun
July 29, 2001 -    Updates at 0700

Good morning. There's little that's new, but lots of progress as our time in California rapidly dwindles. The kitchen is entirely packed. I've got a few plants to box (but not until tomorrow), and four or five boxes to do for odd-sized or left-out items and the move will be ready. Still to do: Laundry, a Good Will run, and cleaning. Oh, right, and a bath for the dog. I think I'll start my Monday with that.

Please note that once past Wednesday, connectivity is up in the air. I don't anticipate any problems except for one of our stops, where I was unable to find any dialup numbers local for any of the ISP accounts that I have access to. But I may also be exhausted. So hang in there, if I miss a day or two, all is not lost.

I'll be back here later, I've more to say, but things to do right now. See you around!

July 30, 2002 -    Updates at 0745

Absolutely nothing about Linux today. Ooops. That was about Linux, wasn't it? Oh, well. Good morning. Here it is, our last full day in Sunnyvale, California. I have so much to do that I don't know where to start. Actually, I'm lying. I do know where to start, and that's with shutting down both remaining computers (Marcia's and mine), taking down the DSL equipment and packing that up for use at the other end of our move. Once I do that, my connectivity is going to be in the hands of the Dialup Gods, so think good thoughts. I'll make appearances here and there, when it's possible.

Tomorrow the truck rolls up, we pack it, and our stuff is driven away by a complete stranger. Then we roll out and up to Sacramento. From there, on the First through the Fifth of August, we drive across country. That's the plan anyway. Wish us luck. Now to work with me. See you soon!

Mon    Tues    WEDNESDAY    Thu    Fri    Sat    Sun
July 31, 2002 -    Updates at 0625 and 1735

Good morning. A whirlwind day yesterday. I am very, very tired and sore. Today we pack the truck. The driver called yesterday, he'll be here between 8 and 9 this morning. I think that with a big push we can get our space in the trailer loaded in about 3 hours. My brother-in-law, Mike, is down from Sacramento to help, and William, our next door neighbor, is taking the day off to assist as well. Thank you, gentlemen! Marcia's going to take Sally to work, getting her out from under foot.

The good news is that we're scheduled for the truck to drop off at our new place in Bowie, Maryland on the Seventh. That's pretty good, as we had a four day window, not counting contingencies (like load and unload problems with other customers). Woo hoo. Anyway, I have a TV to pack, and a futon frame to disassemble, I'd best get that done. Posting may be a bit sporadic, or simply off my normal schedule. I don't know right now. Thanks for all of the kind thoughts we've received via email - We'll have a safe drive and a successful move, with all of you pulling for us. See you around.

1735 - Safe in Sacramento. Together with Mike and William, we got all our gear on the truck in just over 3 hours. After the truck left, Marcia came home. We organized our vehicles, locked the house and dropped the key through the mailslot. All done. Woo Hoo.

Drive Update: Sacramento to Salt Lake City. Woo Hoo! Updates when I get to it.

Good morning. I had the few minutes necessary to say hello. So... hello! We're getting ready for our first leg: 650 miles. I've gotta go. See y'all around.

August 02, 2002 -    Updates at 0645 MDT

And there goes Falco ... We were watching some football movie with Gene Hackman and Keanu Reeves, on HBO. Sitting in a Best Western in Salt Lake. We did the 650 miles very nicely yesterday.Let's see, what else is news? Due to Verizon's setup between the CO and our neighborhood, I'm not going to be able to get Speakeasy DSL unless I go for IDSL or SDSL. One is ratty slow, the other is too expensive. Sigh. So it's down to Comcast or Verizon.

We have 600 miles or so to cover today, so we'd better get started. Thanks for helping watch over us. Later!

August 03, 2002 -    Updates at 2245 CDT

Lots to tell, and little time before my eyes drop shut. First, yes, we're now in the Central Time Zone. Davenport, Iowa to be exact. We only got here about three hours past our original planned arrival time. The downside is that the Blazer isn't with us. That LEMON of a Chevy is sitting in the service bay of a dealership in Lincoln, Nebraska. It's complaining of a cracked flexplate. This was creating a horrid clatter. Our decision was to rent a car, and continue our trip. After our gear arrives in Maryland, I'll drive the rental (a Buick LeSabre) back half way across the continent, pickup the repaired Blazer, and drive that home. Not my idea of a good time, but the good news was that I noticed that the noise was really bad while gassing up in Lincoln. We weren't 7000 miles from anywhere when trouble struck. It'll work out.

In other good news, Sara at Speakeasy helped me figure out how to make our DSL setup work. Normal 1.5M/384K ADSL, reasonably priced. Thanks, Sara! It's the people work there that really make Speakeasy ROCK!

Finally for now, I haven't gotten any email for the last couple of days, and won't be able to until at least tomorrow night, and maybe not until Monday. If you're waiting to hear from me, then please be patient. Thanks. Tomorrow's drive is the run to Clarion, Pennsylvania. Then Monday is a relatively short 6 hour run into Maryland! Almost there, and yes, Sally's still doing fine. Take care, catch you back here soon.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia.
