0647 - Good morning. I meant well, I really did. But after sleeping in past 1000 on Sunday morning, getting up at 0545 on Monday morning was ragged at best, and actually happened at something like 0622. The commute in took an hour and a half, then I worked straight through, skipping lunch. I bailed out "early", which turned out to mean about 1635 by the time I made it out the door. Home by 1800, watered in the new plantings front and back:
So, after watering, I sorted mail, did the trash, paid bills, backed up the assorted systems to the away-drive, and wrapped up with the "working day" at around 2043. Whew! I just didn't have much energy for a post, even though I intended one all day yesterday. I pulled these images off the camera for this morning and called it a night.
I'm hopeful of not having another May frost and losing yet another batch of tomatoes. Progress is, and those perennials in the front beds should fill in and mass nicely. You'll see in next month's pictures. Marcia's strawberries are doing wonderfully, too. It's about time to take the safety rails off the first berry patch...
At work I'm struggling with understanding how PF rulesets really interact. I'm reading lots of docs, writing syntactically correct rules, then testing them to see if they do what I intended or not. I'm getting better... I'm also going to build a new pair of mailservers soon, but there's nothing interesting there anymore, just drudgery.
That said, I'd best be moseying along. We've got stunningly lovely spring weather here, and still I'm going to work. I must have a mortgage. Hmmm. Ciao!

1336 - Good afternoon. I was up and out at the crack of still-a-little-bit-dark-outside to go visit my dentist and talk about implants. Over the years of behaviour (mis- and otherwise), there were periods where I didn't take very good care of my teeth. Fortunately I still have most of them, but four molars fell by the wayside.
Today we were talking about implants. To get the job done right will require one extraction (for a wisdom tooth that's leaned into the way), four implants (surgical), four posts and four crowns. That's going to take several months overall, and cost probably $17 grand by the time all is said and done. Well, since I'm going to be using my PTO for appointments and recovery, it's just as well that we won't have any money for a holiday this year. And no, insurance won't cover a red cent, since they're implants to replace teeth that were extracted before coverage was instituted with the current provider. Such is live. At least we'll definitely have a medical deduction on next year's taxes.
I finished up the PF ruleset today, and I'm about to start testing. Now to get back to the grind... Ciao!

0857 - Good morning. I just have to link to this image: Naked Chicks with Guns.
Now that's out of my system, the mystery writer's series that we're attending down at the Smithsonian started last night. It's being done by Noreen Wald (aka Nora Charles), a Poo-Bah in the MWA and a writer of "cosy" mysteries. Last night it was just her chatting about movies and books and plot points and concept and opening lines. Pretty interesting stuff.
Today at work I'm setting up a new user in assorted systems, configuring his workstation, and continuing testing on the new firewall I've been designing. A busy day awaits, I'll get to it now if you'll excuse me. Have a great day!

0915 - Good morning. I'm off to the home center store (one of them anyway, I'm not sure which just yet) in a while to pick up some things for an assortment of small projects. But something just came up which changes things - I can't contact work. Looks like the net is down. I'm going to head in to work and see if it's at our end, or in MCI's hands. Be back later!

1021 - Good morning. Back from work, already. Yesterday's post was written early and posted late. In the interim, I went to the office, found the power company trucks clustered around a pole that took a lightning hit. So I toddled off again, went shopping, then came home and put cherry tomatoes in the ground, seeded some problem areas in the back ... and did other stuff, which I can't remember right now. I kept checking on the work situation - it was unchanging by the time I got to bed at around 11. So this morning I awoke to see that some parts of the network were up ... therefore power was back. I went into the office, met up with a coworker, and brought up the bits that didn't autoboot for one reason or another, checked over everything, and drove back here. We've got errands now, and a quick pickup at Linda Rose's then back home. So I'll check back later - the day is in chaos already! Ciao!

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
