2038 - Good evening. It's Memorial Day, and although I stayed busy finishing up the cleaning, I took the time. I took the time so spare a thought for our serving men and women, for those who have died in service to our country, and for those who make the sacrifice on a daily basis for duty, honor, and country. My thanks!

I've spent the entire weekend, all three days, working inside. Tomorrow I'm going into the office for a couple of hours, then I'll burn up some comp time from last week's Sunday effort. Then I'll get into my garden grubbies, and weed out the beds, especially the lower two that are in early dire need. I may mow again, to, just for maintenance purposes. Of course, that could all change, since the forecast has shifted from partly cloudy and 20% chance of rain to 60% chance of thunder storms for tonight and tomorrow. Molly so doesn't love thunder. I'll play it by ear, I guess. Ciao!

2238 - Whoops! It's funny, really how time gets away from one, in both the smaller and the larger contexts. After a busy blooking weekend, Tuesday night I caught up on bills, backups, etc. Last night I did some reading for the Summer Session class in network security that I'm in at UMUC, and did stuff for Marcia's computer. Tonight, I re-read chapter 1 from the book, did the online module, generated four pages of notes plus one-and-a-half pages of assignment. There's another page's worth of assignment to be done yet (weekend, methinks), and "online participation goals" that needs be met.

In the larger context of time getting away from one, it's the tenth anniversary of our marriage, tomorrow. I guess I better get a card or something, huh? Oh, hey, the traditional 10th anniversary gifts might be pretty easy to fulfill... but not if I want to be thoughtful. If you hear reports of my untimely death on Saturday, you'll know why.

Time to sleep. Ciao!

1736 - Good afternoon. We had a nice anniversary dinner last night at Sly Horse Tavern over in Crofton, adjacent to the Country Club there. Marcia enjoyed the veal, and I had a fettucini with beef tips, onion and red peppers in a burdundy sauce. Oh, yum!

Today, I changed my plan, and a good thing, too. I was about ready to head down to one of the stores to look at lighting, but checked the weather channel on my way out. Change happens, and in this case, with thunderstorms pending, I thought I'd better get the outside work, explicitly the mowing, done as early as possible. Just as I'd finished outside, a bit past noon, the skies opened. We took 1.12 inches of rain in a couple of hours. While that was going on, I took off the edges of the old carpet, all the way around the dining room. I lightly sanded the cove molding, and painted it all the way down. It'll look much nicer that way, when we get the new carpet in. Speaking of that, we've got the call in to the carpet folks who did such a good job on our upstairs carpeting last year. Hopefully we'll hear from them soon.

I've done some school work to round out the afternoon, and there's a bit more to accomplish before the weekend's done. But I'm done for the day. Time to relax. Ciao!

2152 - Good afternoon. June, eh? Another month gone by. But this is the month of strawberries. Yum. There were a few ready this morning, so they became part of my breakfast. You'll note the table above. We ended up at 9.22 inches of rain for the month of May, better than double the normal rainfall. Be interesting (to me, at least) to see how the rest of the year plays out.

I was wandering about in Second Life last night. I came across the Museum of Robots, and the artwork of Eric Joyner. Fun stuff. If you go there, check out my favorite "print", called Round 69. More recently, I've been wandering around the (virtual) Dresden Gallery, a great collection of art. I stopped in front of Daughter of Herodias, wondering what that pretty girl was doing with a head on a platter. I guessed that it might be that of John the Baptist - that would make the girl Solome. So it was.

May was one of the best months in a long time. It turned out to have the lowest casualty count since the whole dance in Iraq started, this go-round. One can only hope that this is (as Jerry puts it) what winning looks like. The fact is, we still lost some of our fine folks in service. Let's finish whatever goals the Bush Administration would like to accomplish over there, and bring the troops home, eh? Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
