2135 - Whoa! A productive day, and it ain't over yet. It started on a down-note, when I realized I didn't have enough roasted coffe this morning at 0600. Grrrrr. 50/50 with store bought, and boy howdy, could I taste the difference! Tonight: roasted another couple of batches, much happier tomorrow. Worked on a new mail server, prepared some other stuff for projects later in the week, and got all the regular evening stuff done for a Monday. Well, almost all. I've still got the trash to do. But I pushed in getting fertilizer/HALTS and Grubex put down on the lawns right after I got home, to get it watered in by this evening's rain. So far only about 0.02", but the forecast is up to about 1.5" over the next day and a half. Best get things done. But first...

Did you hear about the refined definition of Amazon Rank? Yeah, I think it sucks, too. Amazon is now claiming it's a "glitch", and explaining very little. Yeah, harsh judgement, maybe the #amazonfail hashtag will turn out to have been a glitch, too. One can but wonder what tomorrow will bring. Ciao!

1858 - I'd probably do new windows. Money not withstanding, if there were one major home improvement project I'd like to get done that needs professionals, it's the windows. One's broken (and inexpertly fixed by yours truly), and the plastic is failing on most of them. The problem is it'll cost 20 grand to get done, and we'll not see that money back ever. Then again, it's moot unless severe need arises...

Nothing much else going on. Cleaning out downloaded junk, pitching most of it and burning the rest to archives. Reading the unending stack of magazines that I try to keep up with. Playing with KDE 4.2 and sticking with it instead of running back to Gnome (a good sign). Ciao!

Sewing platform
Sewing platform

2158 - Current listening: To Terrapin: May 28, 1977 Hartford, CT (Live), arguably one of the best of the Grateful Dead concerts, and certainly in the core of my favorite era in the Dead's career. When I have to pick one studio album, I lean towards Terrapin Station every time. Of course, that was before I'd managed to see them live: Pigpen was gone, too. I suppose it's just as well I wasn't ten years older - I probably wouldn't have survived my twenties... Still, listening to the Dead takes me to one of my happy places. Other works that have that effect: Pink Floyd - Meddle; and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer - Brain Salad Surgery;

Four coats of finish later, I'm happy with the platform I made for Marcia's sewing machine. I think she is, too. The shape of the notch-out was much more complex than with her old Rose sewing machine. The Viking D1 tapers horizontally and vertically, and has an asymmetrical gentle rounding on the "nose". For that, I merely had to get the shape close, then come up and scribe it to the real thing. There's also a rim ledge, so the cutout had to taper back and away from the machine very quickly. I coped with that at the same time as I did a gentle roundover with the router. First, a pass with a 1/4" roundover bit to ease the top edge. Then I setup with an over-extended dovetailing bit, and allowed the shank to ride on the wood while the bit angled the workpiece back. Then a bit of filing and a fair amount of sanding to make it look as though it had all been effortless. And that was the hardest part of the work, where it can't even be seen. Ain't that always the case! Now to read for a while. Ciao!

1938 - Full Disclosure: I'm an Exchange user again. The good news: I'm not an Outlook user, except to use it as a utility for setting server-side sorting rules. Seems kind of heavy for the use, but there you go. For mail, I'm using thunderbird on my Linux box, and Mail on the iPhone (which is the real reason for the change, along with the pending demise of our current internal POP3S/IMAPS box. It makes it much more convenient for me to check my work mail. So I'll do that more often ... and that's a good thing. Now, school work. Ciao!

2107 - Roasting coffee, reading, doing schoolwork (or trying to). Oh, hey ... I also got the fishing gear cleaned up and reorganized - we're going to get some fishing in this year, come hell or high water. Our last California licenses were from Y2K. Yikes! Anyway, there goes another weekend.

Our condolences to the familes and units of the fallen warriors reported this week by DoD.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
