Mike and Rob at the Naval Academy
Mike and Rob at the Naval Academy

1953 - It wasn't a sunny day, by any stretch of the imagination. But it wasn't raining on us, at all, when we visited Annapolis. At right you can see Rob and Mike at the Centennial monument for the Submarine Force, at the Naval Academy. We've been to Annapolis several times, but somehow never went onto the grounds. It's a very nice facility, steeped in history.

Yesterday I unwound a bit, and didn't get jack-all done. In the evening, Linda and Josh came over to supper - I grilled some turkey cheeseburgers. Yum. Worth saying that again: Yum. Today was just another working day, trying to settle back into the pace, and fix internally problems that were caused externally. But the fixes are useful, and necessary, so that's all good. Tonight, all the regular chores have been done, I should go eat now, before attacking school work while our visitors are down in Williamsburg for a couple of days. Oh, yeah, and I've got tingly throat and sneezing. Gotta kick this bug in the ass before we head out to see Clapton and Winwood this weekend. Ciao!

1646 - I'm home, have been since 1400. This is a heinous rhinovirus. While I don't have a fever, I have aches that often accompany such. Pounding head due to alternating clogged and running sinuses. An ability to focus that rivals a small household appliance with ADHD. Welcome to life. Oh, yeah, all the iPhone whiners? Put yourself on the other side of the table before whinging about the AT&T contract you got into of your own free will, or the features that your phone doesn't have. The iPhone wasn't "good enough" for me until they went 3G. The software update is going to take me most of the last 20% of the way there. Yeah, it sucks that AT&T isn't going to support MMS right away, or that tethering isn't even on the horizon. But it wasn't before, either. I don't really need video, magnetometer, or a higher res, non-fixed focus camera (although the latter would be nicest of those three). Now, time to drain again. Ciao!

Big weather

1402 - Above, courtesy of Weather.com, you can see the evening storms that tromped through yesterday. The leading edge of red (thunderstorms) was easily an "hour thick" at the pace they were moving. More thunderheads developed behind them — we had lightning for 2+ hours, and rain for about 4. Yesterday's total precip: 0.92".

To go along with the weather, my cold just kept getting worse. Theraflu didn't help, nothing did. I went to bed around 10, finally, and was awake until 0430, at which point exhaustion claimed me. I think I'm back on the upslope now, and if so, will make it to work tomorrow. As it was, I only did about half an hour of remote tasks first thing this morning, and "attended" a soul-draining remote sales presentation between 1030 and 1230.

To amuse myself, I downloaded the Windows 7 RC, and installed it in a Parallels VM here on Harmony. Initial impressions: A simpler installation, and faster, too. Less load on the system than XP running in Parallels. More on this later, if I can find the time. I'm only doing this now because I haven't the energy to mow... Ciao!

2033 - No progress, no decay. Still feel like shite, but in stasis: neither rotting nor composting. I was telling our visiting family members that I felt bad that I felt bad, and that I would apologize, but it wasn't my fault. So, sorry, anyway. This doubles the amount of sick time I've taken in the last five years, to five days. Argh! l8r.

0737 - Some progress. I slept much of the night (a big improvement there). But I'm still a useless bobble-headed sack of skin at the moment. Today is (was) a vacation day, so that I could go downtown with our guests. That isn't happening. I have the energy of a kitten in a sack rolling around on the Ankh. And that comes and goes. My only "accomplishment" yesterday was to get Jerry's column formatted and posted. Back later, depending on circumstances. Ciao!

2225 - So, we went to see Clapton and Winwood perform at the Verizon Center last night. Awesome show, rockin'. Today, feeling 7000% better than, say, Friday, we went with my sister and her brood over to visit Mount Vernon. Nice place, well restored, excellent presentation, and an absolutely lovely day for it. Clear, high 70's, only medium humidity. Much fun. Supper tonight at Ruby Tuesday's. And I've said my goodbyes, as they won't be up when I'm up and out to work before 0700 tomorrow morning. My sister and her hubby have a couple of wonderful kids, and I'm really, really glad they had a chance to come and visit.

I admit to being prepared to face another distressingly long list of US servicemember fatalities this week, after last week's unhappy long list. I'm sad, yet, that we lost four more in service of our policies in the Middle East. The honor their sacrifice does us is immeasurable. My hat's off, gentlemen and ladies of our Armed Services. While I visited the home of our first Commander-in-Chief today, I thought of all of you. Thank you! Our condolences to the families and units of the fallen.

Visit the rest of the DAYNOTES GANG, a collection of bright minds and sharp wits. Really, I don't know why they tolerate me <grin>. My personal inspiration for these pages is Dr. Jerry Pournelle. I am also indebted to Bob Thompson and Tom Syroid for their patience, guidance and feedback. Of course, I am sustained by and beholden to my lovely wife, Marcia. You can find her online too, at http://www.dutchgirl.net/. Thanks for dropping by.
